Monthly average aerosol optical depth at 320 nm obtained with a Brewer MKIII spectrophotometer for Hobart, Australia (42.8806° S, 147.3250° E) over a 21‐year period. There is a linear trend of 15.4% per decade. There are 9 months when the average aerosol optical depth exceeds twice the monthly standard deviation.

Estimating Soil Compaction Risk at Regional Scales Using Meteorological Data and Soil Spectroscopy
ABSTRACT Soil compaction is a significant form of soil degradation in Europe, reducing agricultural productivity, limiting carbon sequestration and increasing greenhouse gases emissions. In response, the forthcoming European Union Soil Monitoring and Resilience Law requires spatial assessment of topsoil and subsoil compaction risk at district, that is,

Enforcing environmental law in the Amazon
Abstract This article identifies the underlying obstacles to enforcement of laws against environmental crimes such as illegal logging, mining and ranching. With four departments (provinces) from Colombia as case studies, it assesses enforcement of the country's main environmental law, Law 2111, which is one of Latin America's strongest. The article has

The Intra-Mercurial Planets [PDF]
NATURE (vol. xviii. p. 569) in commenting upon my letter published the previous week, regarding the discovery of Vulcan, accused me of being not only “indefinite,” but “contradictory.” The number containing my letter (p. 539) has, from some unknown cause, not yet reached me, though I am in receipt of four numbers published later.

Sliding Mode Control in Aerospace Applications: A Survey
ABSTRACT Sliding mode control (SMC) enjoys robustness to matched and unmatched (in the case of minimum phase input‐output dynamics) bounded perturbations, and finite time convergence. Second‐order and higher‐order sliding mode control systems (2‐SMC/HOSMC) retain all the advantages of sliding mode control, but in addition can be applied to systems of ...

ABSTRACT The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable electronics necessitates sustainable power sources to replace the limited electrochemical battery. While mechanical energy harvesting offers a promising solution, traditional harvesters face challenges of irregular and low−frequency environmental sources. This review presents the

Pulse‐duration‐controlled ultra‐short laser processing is shown to directly create binder‐free Fe‐enriched NiOx electrodes with tunable porosity, active‐site density, and oxygen‐evolution kinetics. Shorter pulses generate defect‐rich nanostructures that accelerate charge transfer, promote highly active NiFeOOH formation, and deliver durable alkaline ...

This study develops binder‐free IrO2–Ni‐based electrodes through liquid‐phase synthesis to elucidate how Ni‐based support chemistry governs interfacial electronic interactions and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. The IrO2–Ni2P electrode exhibits superior activity and durability, attributed to strong interfacial charge transfer that ...
