An interface element based on the partition of unity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
An alternative interface finite element is developed. By using the partition of unity property of finite element shape functions, discontinuous shape functions are added to the standard finite element basis.

Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Soft Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) can be actuated via electromechanical, electrochemical, or electrothermal effects. a) Electromechanical effects include Maxwell stress, electrostriction, and the electroclinic effect. b) Electrochemical effects arise from electrode redox reactions.

Mesh refinement in finite element analysis by minimization of the stiffness matrix trace [PDF]

open access: yes
Most finite element packages provide means to generate meshes automatically. However, the user is usually confronted with the problem of not knowing whether the mesh generated is appropriate for the problem at hand.

Effective Width of Floor Systems for Application in Seismic Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1980
Effective width coefficients for floor systems have been developed for use in the analysis of frames subjected to lateral seismic loads. The results cover a wide range of the governing nondimensional parameters, and are applicable to floor slabs with ...

A new method for the dynamic mesh stiffness calculation of spur gear under centrifugal effect

open access: yesJixie qiangdu
During the gear meshing process, the driving speed plays a crucial role in evaluating mesh stiffness, a factor that many scholars often overlook along with the accompanying centrifugal effects.

Photo‐Switching Thermal and Lithium‐Ion Conductivity in Azobenzene Polymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Light‐responsive azobenzene polymers control thermal and ionic transport simultaneously through structural transitions. UV illumination disrupts π–π stacking, converting crystalline trans states to amorphous cis configurations. Thermal conductivity drops from 0.45 to 0.15 W·m−1·K−1 while Li+ diffusivity increases 100 fold. This dual transport switching

Analysis of mesh stiffness of herringbone gear considering modification

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2019
Herringbone gear is a key component in the reducer. Its mesh stiffness is an important parameter in gear dynamics research. In this paper, an improved Velex method is proposed to calculate the mesh stiffness of herringbone gears, and compared with Weber method and Finite Element Method (FEM), the accuracy of the method is proved.

Endothelial Cells Angiogenesis in Sulfated Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) Hydrogels Enhanced by Bioactive Glass‐Released Ions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A mechanically tunable hydrogel composed of gelatin, chondroitin sulfate and laminin promotes angiogenesis in vitro without the supplement of growth factors. Endothelial cells morphogenesis was further enhanced by medium conditioned with bioactive glass 58S‐released ions (Ca and Si), thus offering a promising strategy to vascularize 3D tissue ...
