Frequency of Microplastics in Mesopelagic Fishes from the Northwest Atlantic [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2018
Microplastics are a ubiquitous pollutant in our seas today and are known to have detrimental effects on a variety of organisms. Over the past decade numerous studies have documented microplastic ingestion by marine species with more recent investigations

Mesopelagic fish off Mozambique [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
The mesopelagic fauna off Mozambique was studied on five cruises of R.V. "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen" during 1977 and 1978. It primarily consisted of Myctophids. At most stations, Benthosema fibulatum or Diaphus spp. were dominant.

Mesopelagic Fish Traits: Functions and Trade‐Offs [PDF]

open access: yesFish and Fisheries
Fishes inhabiting the mesopelagic zone of the world's oceans are estimated to account for the majority of the world's fish biomass. They have recently attracted new attention because they are part of the biological carbon pump and have been reconsidered ...

Ocean deoxygenation linked to ancient mesopelagic fish decline [PDF]

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Mesopelagic fish are integral to ocean food webs and play an important role in carbon transport through their vertical migration behavior. Ocean deoxygenation caused by anthropogenic warming is expected to pose severe threats to mesopelagic fauna by ...

The Ypresian ichthyofauna of the Monte Solane Lagerstätte (Verona, northern Italy): A deep dive into the western Tethys early Eocene mesopelagic setting. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE
The Ypresian (lower Eocene) fish-bearing site of Monte Solane (Verona province, northern Italy) was discovered in the early 2000s, and its stratigraphy was thoroughly investigated more than a decade ago.

Otolith characterization and integrative species identification of adult mesopelagic fishes from the western North Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Fish diversity and ecology in the ocean’s mesopelagic zone are understudied compared to other marine regions despite growing interest in harvesting these potential resources.

Stranding of Mesopelagic Fishes in the Canary Islands

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
Most mesopelagic fishes perform large diel vertical migrations from the deep-sea zone to the surface. Although there is a trade-off between a higher food availability at the upper layers and an energy cost and predation risk, incursion towards the surface also implies a transport by currents, where the fish are exposed to a stranding risk on the coast.

Importance of the Lunar Cycle on Mesopelagic Foraging by Atlantic Bluefin Tuna in the Upwelling Area of the Strait of Messina (Central Mediterranean Sea)

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
The influence of the lunar cycle on bluefin tuna foraging in the upwelling area of the Strait of Messina was investigated by exploring trophic interaction with mesopelagic fish and cephalopod prey.

From acoustic scattering layers to individuals - behaviour of a mesopelagic fish at different scales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Enormous abundances of small fish commute each night from several hundred meters depth to forage in the productive surface waters. Such so-called mesopelagic fishes are central in the food web and their daily vertical migration likely plays an essential ...
