The Contribution of Lake-Effect Snow to Annual Snowfall Totals in the Vicinity of Lakes Erie, Michigan, and Ontario

open access: yesFrontiers in Water, 2022
In the Great Lakes region, total cold-season snowfall consists of contributions from both lake-effect systems (LES) and non-LES snow events. To enhance understanding of the regional hydroclimatology, this research examined these separate contributions ...

The microcirculation: physiology at the mesoscale

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 2011
Abstract The microcirculation exemplifies the mesoscale in physiological systems, bridging larger and smaller scale phenomena. Microcirculatory research represents an example of a ‘middle‐out,’ rather than ‘top‐down’ or ‘bottom‐up,’ approach to the study of biological function.

Symmetry at the Cellular Mesoscale [PDF]

open access: yesSymmetry, 2019
Symmetry plays a functional role in the structure and action of biomolecules and their associations and interactions in living cells. This symmetry is a natural consequence of the evolutionary mechanisms that lead to the development of life, and it ranges from perfect point-group symmetry in protein oligomers to more approximate symmetries in the ...

FluxSat: Measuring the Ocean–Atmosphere Turbulent Exchange of Heat and Moisture from Space

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
Recent results using wind and sea surface temperature data from satellites and high-resolution coupled models suggest that mesoscale ocean–atmosphere interactions affect the locations and evolution of storms and seasonal precipitation over continental ...

A Hybrid Four‐Dimensional Variational Data Assimilation System for the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS‐Atmosphere): Leveraging the Joint Effort for Data Assimilation Integration (JEDI)

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
A global Four‐Dimensional Ensemble Variational (4DEnVar) data assimilation system for the Atmospheric component of the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS‐A) is presented that uses the Joint Effort for Data assimilation Integration (JEDI).

Separating Mesoscale and Submesoscale Flows from Clustered Drifter Trajectories

open access: yesFluids, 2020
Drifters deployed in close proximity collectively provide a unique observational data set with which to separate mesoscale and submesoscale flows. In this paper we provide a principled approach for doing so by fitting observed velocities to a local ...

Reconstructing Mesoscale Network Structures

open access: yesComplexity, 2019
When facing the problem of reconstructing complex mesoscale network structures, it is generally believed that models encoding the nodes organization into modules must be employed. The present paper focuses on two block structures that characterize the empirical mesoscale organization of many real‐world networks, i.e., the bow-tie and the core-periphery

A Numerical–Experimental Approach for Multi‐Matrix Fiber‐Reinforced Plastics Characterization Using Finite Element Model Updating

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A numerical–experimental framework is developed for characterizing multi‐matrix fiber‐reinforced polymers (MM‐FRPs) combining epoxy and polyurethane matrices. Harmonic bending tests are integrated with finite element model updating (FEMU) to simultaneously identify elastic and viscoelastic material parameters.

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...

Hundred‐Meter‐Scale In Situ Observations Reveal Joint Impact of Humidity and Wind on Raindrop Microphysics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The mechanisms linking raindrop size distributions (DSDs) to environmental conditions remain poorly understood, limiting their practical application. We develop a unique fine‐scale vertical in situ data set to reveal the evolution of near‐surface DSDs ...
