Patterning the Void: Combining L‐Systems with Archimedean Tessellations as a Perspective for Tissue Engineering Scaffolds

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a novel multi‐scale scaffold design using L‐fractals arranged in Archimedean tessellations for tissue regeneration. Despite similar porosity, tiles display vastly different tensile responses (1–100 MPa) and deformation modes. In vitro experiments with hMSCs show geometry‐dependent growth and activity. Over 55 000 tile combinations

Hundred‐Meter‐Scale In Situ Observations Reveal Joint Impact of Humidity and Wind on Raindrop Microphysics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The mechanisms linking raindrop size distributions (DSDs) to environmental conditions remain poorly understood, limiting their practical application. We develop a unique fine‐scale vertical in situ data set to reveal the evolution of near‐surface DSDs ...

Mesoscale Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 2008
Mesoscale meteorology is the study of atmospheric phenomena with typical spatial scales between 10 and 1000 kilometers. Examples of mesoscale phenomena include fronts, mesoconvective systems, thunderstorms, gap winds, downslope windstorms, and land‐sea breezes.

A Stochastic Multi-scale Approach for Numerical Modeling of Complex Materials - Application to Uniaxial Cyclic Response of Concrete

open access: yes, 2016
In complex materials, numerous intertwined phenomena underlie the overall response at macroscale. These phenomena can pertain to different engineering fields (mechanical , chemical, electrical), occur at different scales, can appear as uncertain, and are

Integrative Approaches for DNA Sequence‐Controlled Functional Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DNA is emerging as a programmable building block for functional materials with applications in biomimicry, biochemical, and mechanical information processing. The integration of simulations, experiments, and machine learning is explored as a means to bridge DNA sequences with macroscopic material properties, highlighting current advances and providing ...

Studying geometric structures in meso-scale flows

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2014
Geometric shapes of coherent structures such as ramp or cliff like signals, step changes and waves, are commonly observed in meteorological temporal series and dominate the turbulent energy and mass exchange between the atmospheric surface layer and the ...

Investigation of mesoscale meteorological phenomena as observed by geostationary satellite [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
Satellite imagery plus conventional synoptic observations were used to examine three mesoscale systems recently observed by the GOES-EAST satellite. The three systems are an arc cloud complex (ACC), mountain lee wave clouds and cloud streets parallel to ...

Multimodal Structural Color Graphics Based on Colloidal Photonic Microdome Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid photonic system combining colloidal crystals and microscale domes is designed to achieve four switchable optical states via the interplay of Bragg reflection and TIR interference. The graphics composed of the photonic microdome arrays provide tunable, angle‐sensitive structural coloration and concealed‐to‐revealed transitions, offering a ...

Mechanisms producing different precipitation patterns over north‐eastern Italy: insights from HyMeX‐SOP1 and previous events [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
During the first HyMeX Special Observation Period (SOP1) field campaign, the target site of north‐eastern Italy (NEI) experienced a large amount of precipitation, locally exceeding the climatological values and distributed among several heavy‐rainfall ...

Toughening β‐Ga2O3 via Mechanically Seeded Dislocations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
β‐Ga2O3 is promising for next‐generation semiconductors but its brittleness limits flexible and high‐precision applications. Here, mechanically seeded dislocations introduced by surface deformation improved damage tolerance in (001) β‐Ga2O3. Nanoindentation and characterization show dislocations suppress cleavage cracks by enabling stable plastic ...
