A general definition of metabolic pathways useful for systematic organization and analysis of complex metabolic networks

Nature Biotechnology, 2000
A set of linear pathways often does not capture the full range of behaviors of a metabolic network. The concept of 'elementary flux modes' provides a mathematical tool to define and comprehensively describe all metabolic routes that are both stoichiometrically and thermodynamically feasible for a group of enzymes.

Pathway knockout and redundancy in metabolic networks

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2011
The robustness and stability of complex cellular networks is often attributed to the redundancy of components, including genes, enzymes and pathways. Estimation of redundancy is still an open question in systems biology. Current theoretical tools to measure redundancy have various strengths and shortcomings in providing a comprehensive description of ...

Metabolite–Enzyme Coevolution: From Single Enzymes to Metabolic Pathways and Networks

Annual Review of Biochemistry, 2018
How individual enzymes evolved is relatively well understood. However, individual enzymes rarely confer a physiological advantage on their own. Judging by its current state, the emergence of metabolism seemingly demanded the simultaneous emergence of many enzymes.

Text Mining for Metabolic Pathways, Signaling Cascades, and Protein Networks

Science's STKE, 2005
The complexity of the information stored in databases and publications on metabolic and signaling pathways, the high throughput of experimental data, and the growing number of publications make it imperative to provide systems to help the researcher navigate through these interrelated information resources.
