The rheology of metal injection molding

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2003
Abstract In this study, several readily available polymer binder systems were used to prepare Fe/Ni metal injection molding (MIM) feedstock. A Banbury intensive mixer and screw extrusion were used to achieve optimized feedstock, and the rheological properties of the resulting fluids were evaluated using a capillary rheometry.

Injection Molding of Liquid Metal by Harnessing Nonstick Molds

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces
The fluid nature of liquid metals combined with their ability to form a solid native oxide skin enables them to be patterned in ways that would be challenging for solid metals. The present work shows a unique way of patterning liquid metals by injecting liquid metals into a mold. The mold contains a nonstick coating that enables the removal of the mold,

Applications for Metal Powder Injection Molding

2015
Abstract Metal injection molding (MIM) is a metalworking technology that has its origins as a commercial technology only dating back to the early 1970s. This article explores why the MIM is the preferred solution for many fabricated components.

Rheology in metal powder injection molding

Journal of Central South University of Technology, 2007
By experimental investigation, the various viscous models are compared and evaluated. The proper viscose model is selected for the application in the metal powder injection molding processing analysis. The effects of the different processing parameters, such as the viscose parameters, temperature, pressure, die cavity size on the isothermal and non ...

Advances in titanium metal injection molding

Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics, 2007
The approaches to production of titanium powder injection molded parts are reviewed. Historically, oxygen levels have been too high for structural use (particularly with the Ti-6Al-4V alloy). However, recent advances in starting powders, binders and sintering facilities now allow oxygen levels in the Ti-6Al-4V alloy to be controlled to about 0.2 wt ...

Designing for Metal Powder Injection Molding

2015
Abstract This article commences with a discussion on the qualitative and quantitative criteria for metal injection molding (MIM), including production quantities, shape complexity, material performance, and cost. It discusses geometric factors, such as surface finish, component size, and mass range, which help to identify a component for
