Multipulse lightning currents and metal-Oxide arresters

open access: yes, 1997
Multiple stroke lightning ground flashes can impose surges of exceptional severity on exposed distribution surge arresters. This paper describes a series of tests on metal-oxide (MO) arresters and varistors to study surface flashover mechanisms.

Abnormal Expansion Along the Synthesis of Zinc Stannate: A Way for Porous Ceramics Without Addition of Pore Generators

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 2, February 2026.
The abnormal expansion associated with the simultaneous synthesis and sintering of Zn2SnO4 from ZnO and SnO2 is due to the reaction mechanism and correlated with the conversion. This phenomenon opens the way to manufacture porous ceramics without the addition of pore generators, simplifying the process, and especially the thermal treatment.

A novel embedded voltage‐clamped circuit for multilevel modular converters submodule to suppress very fast transient overvoltage

open access: yesHigh Voltage
The submodule in multilevel modular converters experiences a very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) during switch operation of gas‐insulated switchgear, which also results in overvoltage on power devices, such as thyristors and insulated gate bipolar ...

Reliability evaluation of metal oxide varistors for maintenance scheduling [PDF]

open access: yesWIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment, Vol 91, 2006
Surge overvoltages result in a power system from overcurrents due to atmospheric discharges, induction phenomena, switch operations or faults. In order to reduce the probability of injuries to people and of failure of electrical and electronic systems, power systems within a structure should have adequate equipotential bonding. Surge protective devices

The Microstructural Location of the Intergranular Metal Oxide Phase in a Zinc Oxide Varistor [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
High resolution electron microscopy of a commercial ZnO based varistor reveals that the Bi-rich intergranular phase is found at all three and four grain junctions and that the majority of ZnO grains are not surrounded by an oxide barrier film as hitherto

Computational Model and Experimental Validation of the Influence of Grain‐Boundary Parameters on the Electrical Performance of Arrester Varistor

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ceramic Engineering &Science, Volume 8, Issue 1, January 2026.
This paper presents a calculation model for the nonlinear characteristics of varistors based on a basic conductive mechanism, and it has been verified through experiments. The mechanism of the barrier's effect on electrical performance has been obtained.

An intelligent protection scheme for series-compensated transmission lines connecting large-scale wind farms

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research, 2023
Series-compensated transmission lines (SCTLs) are increasingly preferred for transmitting bulk amounts of electricity generated from the present-day large-scale wind farm to the utility grid due to several technical and economic benefits. However, when a

Accurate Fault Current Phasor Estimation in Series‐Compensated Transmission Lines Using Improved Particle Swarm Optimisation

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
A new evolutionary search algorithm based on improved Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) is introduced in this study to estimate the phasor. The performance has been evaluated through extensive simulations considering transient components, harmonics, and frequency changes in noiseless and noisy conditions.
