Kohn-Sham Exchange Potential for a Metallic Surface

open access: yes, 2006
The behavior of the surface barrier that forms at the metal-vacuum interface is important for several fields of surface science. Within the Density Functional Theory framework, this surface barrier has two non-trivial components: exchange and correlation.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Effect of Accumulative High-Pressure Torsion on Structure and Electrochemical Behavior of Biodegradable Fe-30Mn-5Si (wt.%) Alloy

open access: yesCrystals
A high-pressure torsion (HPT) with a number of revolutions (n) of up to 10 and an advanced method of accumulative HPT (AccHPT), n = 10 with subsequent post-deformation annealing (PDA) at 500 and 600 °C, were applied to a biodegradable Fe-30Mn-5Si (wt ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Heterointerface Engineering of β-Chitin/Carbon Nano-Onions/Ni–P Composites with Boosted Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars Effect for Highly Efficient Electromagnetic Wave Response and Thermal Management

open access: yesNano-Micro Letters, 2022
The rational construction of microstructure and composition with enhanced Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars effect (MWSE) is still a challenging direction for reinforcing electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance, and the related EMW attenuation mechanism ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Green synthesis of graphene oxide by seconds timescale water electrolytic oxidation

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Graphene oxide is highly desired for printing electronics, catalysis, energy storage, separation membranes, biomedicine, and composites. However, the present synthesis methods depend on the reactions of graphite with mixed strong oxidants, which suffer ...
