A Budget and Accounting of Metals at z~0: Results from the COS-Halos Survey

open access: yes, 2014
We present a budget and accounting of metals in and around star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 0$. We combine empirically derived star formation histories with updated supernova and AGB yields and rates to estimate the total mass of metals produced by ...

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Formation of Structure and Properties in Casting Processes on the Example of AZ91 Magnesium Alloy

open access: yesArchives of Foundry Engineering, 2014
Contemporary materials engineering requires the use of materials characterised by high mechanical properties, as these precisely properties determine the choice of material for parts of machinery and equipment. Owing to these properties it is possible to

Magnetocaloric Effect Caused by Paramagnetic Austenite–Ferromagnetic Martensite Phase Transformation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In the present work, the magnetization of Ni50Mn17.5Ga25Cu7.5 alloy undergoing the first-order phase transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite was measured to evaluate the magnetic-field-induced entropy change (MFIEC) and ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Crystallographic Orientation, Recrystallization, and Texture Development in AZ91 Magnesium Alloy Rods Fabricated by Continuous Rotary Extrusion (CRE) [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials
The magnesium alloy AZ91 is widely used in the aviation and automotive industries, where high mechanical properties combined with low density are required. Searching for new, advanced deformation methods in these industries is also essential.

Brazing method produces solid-solution bond between refractory metals [PDF]

open access: yes, 1965
Brazing two refractory metals by diffusion bonding minimizes distortion and avoids excessive grain growth in the metals. This method requires the selection of an interface metal that forms intermediate low-melting eutectics or solid solutions with the ...

Optical metamaterials with different metals

open access: yes, 2012
We investigate the influence of different metals on the electromagnetic response of fishnet metamaterials in the optical regime. We found, instead of using a Drude model, metals with a dielectric function from experimentally measured data should be ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.
