Medicalized Metamorphosis: Biological Rehabilitation of Criminal Offenders

Critical Criminology, 2019
Convicted offenders who consent to medical treatment may secure a preferable sentence. They make these decisions within a hybrid medico-legal system that often views offenders as neurobiological subjects and deviant behavior as a medical problem that may be addressed, in part, through biological intervention. In this article, we use Foucault’s concepts

Dynamic Effects of Initial pH of Substrate on Biological Growth and Metamorphosis of Black Soldier Fly (Diptera: Stratiomyidae)

Environmental Entomology, 2018
Edible insects have become a recognized alternative and sustainable source of high-quality proteins and fats for livestock or human consumption. In the production process of black soldier fly (BSF), (Hermetia illucens L. [Diptera: Stratiomyidae]), initial substrate pH is a critical parameter to ensure the best value of insect biomass, life history ...

Enhancement of larval settlement and metamorphosis through biological and chemical cues in the abalone Haliotis diversicolor supertexta

Aquaculture, 2006
Abstract Chemical and biological cues associated with substrata in the environment were considered to be the primary stimuli initiating larval settlement and metamorphosis in many marine mollusks. In present study, various settlement and metamorphosis inducers at both the laboratory and scale-up experiments were investigated to determine their ...

Organometallic complexes with biological molecules: XVI. Endocrine disruption effects of tributyltin(IV)chloride on metamorphosis of the ascidian larva

Applied Organometallic Chemistry, 2001
AbstractThe effects of tributyltin(IV)chloride (TBT) on the metamorphosis of ascidian larvae of Ciona intestinalis, 2 h after hatching, were investigated. Ascidians are protochordates that lack thyroid follicles and possess thyroid hormones (THs) and their precursors, 3‐monoiodo‐tyrosine (MIT) and 3,5‐diiodo‐tyrosine (DIT), in their endostyle ...

In vivo binding of a biologically active oligopeptide in vegetative buds of the scyphozoan Cassiopea andromeda: demonstration of receptor-mediated induction of metamorphosis

Marine Biology, 1995
Vegetative buds of Cassiopea andromeda (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) metamorphose into polyps in the presence of short synthetic peptides containing proline as the preterminal amino acid at the carboxyl terminus. In an in vivo assay, the binding of the biologically active hexapeptide 14C-dansyl-GPGGPA in buds was shown to be specific and saturable.

Genetic metamorphosis of herpes simplex virus-1 into a biological therapeutic for human cancer

Expert Opinion on Biological Therapy, 2003
Over the past decade, rapid progress has been made in engineering safe, replicating herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) mutants for use as biological oncolytic agents in the treatment of human cancer. While initial efforts demonstrated the potential of HSV-1 mutants as antitumour agents, they relied on viruses that were not sufficiently attenuated ...
