The Concept of Emotion: Further Metaphors
1990The last chapter was devoted to a detailed examination of one of the major metaphors of emotion, namely, EMOTION IS A FLUID IN A CONTAINER, and we saw how that metaphor has its theoretical counterpart in Freudian (psychoanalytic) theories of emotion. The present chapter proceeds along similar lines, but the aim is broader.

1990We have discussed the CONTAINER metaphor in connection with anger, fear, and pride in some detail. The purpose of the present chapter is twofold: First, it is to examine how this metaphor applies to a large number of emotions and, second, to show how a single conceptual metaphor can give considerable structure to the diffuse and vague notion of emotion.
