Investigations into the utility of real-time PCR for the detection, quantitation and characterisation of clinically relevant viruses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The use of PCR as a tool for the diagnostic virology and viral research laboratories has greatly increased in recent years, however the use of conventional PCR and amplicon detection systems can be a complex and relatively slow process that increases the

Metapneumovirus Infections and Respiratory Complications [PDF]

open access: yesSeminars in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2016
Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are the most common illnesses experienced by people of all ages worldwide. In 2001, a new respiratory pathogen called human metapneumovirus (hMPV) was identified in respiratory secretions. hMPV is an RNA virus of the Paramyxoviridae family, and it has been isolated on every continent and from individuals of ...

Human Metapneumovirus Infections in Children

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2008
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is an important cause of lower respiratory tract infections in hospitalized children, but the age-related incidence and effect of hMPV in unselected children in the community have not been evaluated. We studied a cohort of 1,338 children

Structure of the human metapneumovirus polymerase phosphoprotein complex

open access: yesNature, 2019
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cause severe respiratory diseases in infants and elderly adults 1 . No vaccine or effective antiviral therapy currently exists to control RSV or HMPV infections.

Metapneumovirus and acute wheezing in children [PDF]

open access: yesThe Lancet, 2002
A new respiratory virus, human metapneumovirus, was recently identified. We detected this virus by PCR in ten (8%) of 132 consecutive children admitted to Turku Hospital, Finland, for acute expiratory wheezing (median age 7 months, range 4-25). The mean duration of hospital stay was 2.5 days (SD 1.6) and mean duration of respiratory symptoms was 19 ...

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE INCIDENCE OF ACUTE RESPIRATORY VIRAL INFECTION IN CHILDREN'S MULTIDISCIPLINARY HOSPITAL

open access: yesДетские инфекции (Москва), 2018
The results of the evaluation of the incidence of acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI) in a large children's multidisciplinary hospital are presented. It was established that the epidemic process of ARVI in the conditions of a children's versatile ...

Establishment and application of a quadruple real-time RT-PCR for detecting avian metapneumovirus.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
In order to develop an appropriate method for high-throughput detection of avian metapneumovirus, a quadruple real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction assay was established with four pairs of specific primers and four specific probes ...

Avian Metapneumovirus subtype B around Europe: a phylodynamic reconstruction

open access: yesVeterinary Research, 2020
Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) has been recognized as a respiratory pathogen of turkey and chickens for a long time. Recently, a crescent awareness of aMPV, especially subtype B, clinical and economic impact has risen among European researchers and ...

Human Metapneumovirus in Children, Singapore

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2007
Four hundred specimens were collected from pediatric patients hospitalized in Singapore; 21 of these specimens tested positive for human metapneumovirus (HMPV), with the A2 genotype predominating. A 5% infection rate was estimated, suggesting that HMPV is a significant cause of morbidity among the pediatric population of Singapore.

Modulation of Host Immunity by the Human Metapneumovirus [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Microbiology Reviews, 2016
SUMMARYGlobally, as a leading agent of acute respiratory tract infections in children <5 years of age and the elderly, the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has gained considerable attention. As inferred from studies comparing vaccinated and experimentally infected mice, the acquired immune response elicited by this pathogen fails to efficiently clear ...
