Methanogenic cleavage of acetate by lysates of Methanosarcina barkeri [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1984
Cell lysates of acetate-grown Methanosarcina barkeri 227 were found to cleave acetate to CH4 and CO2. The aceticlastic reaction was identified by using radioactive methyl-labeled acetate. Cell lysates decarboxylated acetate in a nitrogen atmosphere, conserving the methyl group in methane.

Method for treating wastewater using microorganisms and vascular aquatic plants [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
A method for treating wastewater compresses subjecting the wastewater to an anaerobic setting step for at least 6 hours and passing the liquid effluent from the anaerobic settling step through a filter cell in an upflow manner.

Nitrite-reductase and peroxynitrite isomerization activities of Methanosarcina acetivorans protoglobin.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Within the globin superfamily, protoglobins (Pgb) belong phylogenetically to the same cluster of two-domain globin-coupled sensors and single-domain sensor globins. Multiple functional roles have been postulated for Methanosarcina acetivorans Pgb (Ma-Pgb)

Analyzing conformational changes in single FRET-labeled A1 parts of archaeal A1AO-ATP synthase

open access: yes, 2018
ATP synthases utilize a proton motive force to synthesize ATP. In reverse, these membrane-embedded enzymes can also hydrolyze ATP to pump protons over the membrane.

Relating Methanogen Community Structure and Anaerobic Digester Function [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Much remains unknown about the relationships between microbial community structure and anaerobic digester function. However, knowledge of links between community structure and function, such as specific methanogenic activity (SMA) and COD removal rate ...

Genome sequence of Acetomicrobium hydrogeniformans OS1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Acetomicrobium hydrogeniformans, an obligate anaerobe of the phylum Synergistetes, was isolated from oil production water. It has the unusual ability to produce almost 4 molecules H2/molecule glucose. The draft genome of A.

Site directed mutagenesis of L-pyrrolysine in dimethylamine methyltransferase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Methanosarcina barkeri is an archaeon and is able to use methylamines as growth substrates for methanogenesis. The methylamine methyltransferases that are involved in initiating methanogenesis from the methylamines have an in-frame amber codon (UAG) that

Genetic, Biochemical, and Molecular Characterization of Methanosarcina barkeri Mutants Lacking Three Distinct Classes of Hydrogenase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The methanogenic archaeon Methanosarcina barkeri encodes three distinct types of hydrogenase, whose functions vary depending on the growth substrate. These include the F_(420)-dependent (Frh), methanophenazine-dependent (Vht), and ferredoxin-dependent ...

Uncovering the small proteome of Methanosarcina mazei using Ribo-seq and peptidomics under different nitrogen conditions

open access: yesNature Communications
The mesophilic methanogenic archaeal model organism Methanosarcina mazei strain Gö1 is crucial for climate and environmental research due to its ability to produce methane. Here, we establish a Ribo-seq protocol for M.
