Mechanics of composites of multiple scales

open access: yes, 1992
This paper uses the method of multiple scales for heterogeneous media to derive the constitutive equations on the meso- and macro-scales for composite materials consisting of fibers and a matrix material.

An Extended Method of Multiple Scales

open access: yes
Abstract Perturbation techniques have long proven useful for analytically describing the dynamics of weakly nonlinear systems. The Method of Multiple Scales (MMS) is one such technique, popular for its versatility and structured approach to handling systems with multiple underlying time scales.

Nutrient/TOR signaling controls adipose mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) to regulate organismal growth in Drosophila

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Animals must match their growth rate to available nutrients. We show that in Drosophila larvae, the nutrient‐sensing TOR kinase controls growth by regulating levels of TFAM, a key regulator of mitochondrial function, in the adipose tissue. When nutrients are abundant, high TOR activity suppresses TFAM, lowering mitochondrial bioenergetic activity and ...

Saliency Detection Method Using Hypergraphs on Adaptive Multiscales

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
Saliency detection plays an important role in the fields of image processing and computer vision. We present an improved saliency detection method by means of hypergraphs on adaptive multi-scales (HAM).

A Class of Shock Wave Solution to Singularly Perturbed Nonlinear Time-Delay Evolution Equations

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2020
Nonlinear singularly perturbed problem for time-delay evolution equation with two parameters is studied. Using the variables of the multiple scales method, homogeneous equilibrium method, and approximation expansion method from the singularly perturbed ...

On the use of the multiple scale method in solving ‘difficult’ bifurcation problems [PDF]

open access: yesMathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2015
Several algorithms consisting in ‘non-standard’ versions of the Multiple Scale Method are illustrated for ‘difficult’ bifurcation problems. Preliminary, the ‘easy’ case of bifurcation from a cluster of distinct eigenvalues is addressed, which requires using integer power expansions, and it leads to bifurcation equations all of the same order.

Peripheral lysosomes recruit PLEKHG3 to focal adhesions and restrain protrusion dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proximity‐dependent labeling at the LAMTOR complex revealed the Rho GEF PLEKHG3 as a lysosome‐proximal protein directing the study toward the influence of lysosome positioning on actin dynamics and cell motility. We show that PLEKHG3 colocalizes with lysosomes at focal adhesion sites and observe that forced peripheral dispersion of lysosomes hinders ...

Some curiosites about the Engel method to estimate equivalence scales [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper lends legitimacy to the food share as an indicator of welfare by demonstrating the conditions necessary in empirical work for the Engel method of estimating equivalence scales to provide an exact measure of welfare.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses
