Biochemical characterization and mercury methylation capacity of Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilms grown in media containing iron hydroxide or fumarate

open access: yesBiofilm, 2023
Geobacter species are common in iron-rich environments and can contribute to formation of methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxic compound with high bioaccumulation potential formed as a result of bacterial and archaeal physiological activity.

The Global Phenomenon of Skin Bleaching

open access: yesVoices in Bioethics, 2014
The global issue of skin bleaching or lightening has become a public health crisis of epic proportions. Many people of color purchase and use skin bleaching products that later cause skin discoloration, skin cancer and other medical problems.

The Compound Capacity of Polar Codes [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
We consider the compound capacity of polar codes under successive cancellation decoding for a collection of binary-input memoryless output-symmetric channels. By deriving a sequence of upper and lower bounds, we show that in general the compound capacity under successive decoding is strictly smaller than the unrestricted compound capacity.

Associations of gestational and early-life exposure to toxic metals and fluoride with a diagnosis of food allergy or atopic eczema at 1 year of age

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2023
Studies have indicated that early-life exposure to toxic metals and fluoride affects the immune system, but evidence regarding their role in allergic disease development is scarce.

Capacities of classical compound quantum wiretap and classical quantum compound wiretap channels [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
We determine the capacity of the classical compound quantum wiretapper channel with channel state information at the transmitter. Moreover we derive a lower bound on the capacity of this channel without channel state information and determine the capacity of the classical quantum compound wiretap channel with channel state information at the ...

Effect of Biochar and Activated Carbon Amendments on Gaseous Mercury Emissions of Soil and Mercury Methylation Rates in Sediment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Mercury is a pervasive global contaminant with a complex biogeochemical cycle. In this biogeochemical cycle, methylmercury (MeHg+) tends to biomagnify and concentrate in fish and seafood consumed by humans.

Human embryonic stem cell-derived test systems for developmental neurotoxicity: a transcriptomics approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) and many forms of reproductive toxicity (RT) often manifest themselves in functional deficits that are not necessarily based on cell death, but rather on minor changes relating to cell differentiation or communication ...
