A study of the Lyman-$α$ line profile in DBA white dwarfs [PDF]
The hydrogen abundances in DBA white dwarfs determined from optical or UV spectra have been reported to differ significantly in some studies. We revisit this problem using our own model atmospheres and synthetic spectra, and present a theoretical investigation of the Lyman-$\alpha$ line profile as a function of effective temperature and hydrogen ...

Very mild disease phenotype of congenic
Background A major boost to cystic fibrosis disease research was given by the generation of various mouse models using gene targeting in embryonal stem cells. Moreover, the introduction of the same mutation on different inbred strains generating congenic

High-Resolution Spectra Observed for SPY. II. DB and DBA Stars [PDF]
We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the stars with helium-dominated spectra in the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY). Atmospheric parameters, masses, and abundances of trace hydrogen are determined and discussed in the context of spectral evolution of white dwarfs.

Semi-Automatic Index Tuning: Keeping DBAs in the Loop [PDF]
To obtain good system performance, a DBA must choose a set of indices that is appropriate for the workload. The system can aid in this challenging task by providing recommendations for the index configuration. We propose a new index recommendation technique, termed semi-automatic tuning, that keeps the DBA "in the loop" by generating recommendations ...

A concept proposed by Berg (Berg, K. 1989. Arteriosclerosis. 9: I-50-I-58) is that a combination of level and variability genes determine an individual's overall plasma lipid levels and atherosclerotic risk.

Transcriptional profiling of C57 and DBA strains of mice in the absence and presence of morphine
Background The mouse C57BL/6 (C57) and DBA/2J (DBA) inbred strains differ substantially in many aspects of their response to drugs of abuse. The development of microarray analyses represents a genome-wide method for measuring differences across strains ...

Effect of Predators of Juvenile Rodents on the Spread of the Hantavirus Epidemic [PDF]
Effects of predators of juvenile mice on the spread of the Hantavirus are analyzed in the context of a recently proposed model. Two critical values of the predation probability are identified. When the smaller of them is exceeded, the hantavirus infection vanishes without extinguishing the mice population.

Progress of the MICE experiment [PDF]
The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a systematic investigation of ionization cooling of a muon beam. The demonstration is based on a simplified version of a neutrino factory cooling channel. As the emittance measurement will be done on a particle-by-particle basis, sophisticated beam instrumentation has been ...

The objective of this study is to identify sex differentially expressed genes in bone using a mouse model of spontaneous fracture, sfx, which lacks the gene for L-gulonolactone oxidase (Gulo), a key enzyme in the ascorbic acid (AA) synthesis pathway.
