An understanding of photosynthesis is fundamental for microalgal biotechnology. The process of photosynthesis can be expressed as a light-driven redox reaction in which carbon dioxide is converted to carbohydrates and oxygen is released as a side-product. This chapter describes the processes in detail from light capture to carbon fixation.

Microalgae for Pigments and Cosmetics
2022Microalgae are among the most promising cell factories of the near future. Their renewable nature, and ability to rely on photosynthesis to use CO2 or nutrients from wastewater to grow and multiply, make them an emergent source of valuable natural compounds.

Biodegradation of phenols by microalgae
Biotechnology Letters, 2002Two green microalgae, Ankistrodesmus braunii and Scenedesmus quadricauda, degraded phenols (each tested at 400 mg ml−1) selected from olive-oil mill wastewaters, within 5 days, with a removal greater than 70%. Green algae may, therefore, represent an alternative to other biological treatment used for the biodegradation of phenol-containing wastewaters.

Microalgae production and biofuel from microalgae
2017Fossil fuel reserves which supplying a major portion of energy needs, are depleting rapidly, and its environmental damages increases day by day. Therefore, like all developed and developing countries, our country have focused on the use of renewable energy sources.

Microalgae taxonomy and breeding.
2013Microalgae are a diverse group of organisms that form the basic component of many eco- systems. The systemic classification of algae is primarily based on their pigment composition and is divided into nine classes. The largest groups are Chlorophyceae (green algae), Phaeophyceae (brown algae), Pyrrophyceae (dinoflagellates), Chrysophyceae (golden ...

Nutraceuticals from Microalgae
2015Nutraceuticals have been defined as food or food products that can simultaneously provide nutrition and pharmaceutical benefits to the body such as prevention and treatment of diseases (Borowitzka 2013). According to the US Institute of Medicine, this includes “any substance that is a food or part of a food which provides medicinal or health benefits ...

Microalgae as Aeroplankton and Allergens
1987Many studies of the airborne algal flora have been perfontved in this century (see e.g. Schlichting, 1969). The sairplings have been carried out with all types of methods, frcm stationary culture plate exposures to aeroplane sampling and the use of different spore traps.
