Protein O‐glycosylation in the Bacteroidota phylum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Species of the Bacteroidota phylum exhibit a unique O‐glycosylation system. It modifies noncytoplasmic proteins on a specific amino acid motif with a shared glycan core but a species‐specific outer glycan. A locus of multiple glycosyltransferases responsible for the synthesis of the outer glycan has been identified.

Combining phosphate species and stainless steel cathode to enhance hydrogen evolution in microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) must work around neutral pH because of microbial catalysis at the anode. To develop a hydrogen evolution cathode that can work at neutral pH remains a major challenge in MEC technology.

Antibiotic Resistance and Biofilm Production in Catalase-Positive Gram-Positive Cocci Isolated from Brazilian Pasteurized Milk

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality and Hazards Control, 2020
Background: Milk is a reservoir for several groups of microorganisms, which may pose health risks. The aim of this work was to assess the antibiotic resistance and biofilm production in catalase-positive Gram-positive cocci isolated from Brazilian ...

Antibiotic Susceptibility, Virulome, and Clinical Outcomes in European Infants with Bloodstream Infections Caused by Enterobacterales

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2021
Mortality in neonates with Gram-negative bloodstream infections has remained unacceptably high. Very few data are available on the impact of resistance profiles, virulence factors, appropriateness of empirical treatment and clinical characteristics on ...

Precise phylogenetic analysis of microbial isolates and genomes from metagenomes using PhyloPhlAn 3.0

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Microbial genomes are available at an ever-increasing pace, as cultivation and sequencing become cheaper and obtaining metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) becomes more effective.

Microbial Weed Control and Microbial Herbicides

open access: yes, 2012
Microbial weed control represents an innovative means to manage troublesome weeds and utilize the naturally occurring biological herbicides produced by soil microorganisms. These compounds kill or hinder the growth of weeds so that beneficial plant species can gain a competitive advantage.

Microbial profile of the appendix niche in acute appendicitis: a novel sampling approach

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study utilized a novel sampling method, ERAT (i.e. endoscopic retrograde appendicitis treatment)‐guided lumen aspiration, to obtain samples from the appendix, and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed for in situ characterization of the appendix microbiome in patients with acute appendicitis.

Cultural replication and microbial evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The aim of this paper is to argue that cultural evolution is in many ways much more similar to microbial than to macrobial biological evolution.

Microbial tryptophan catabolites in health and disease

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Accumulating evidence implicates metabolites produced by gut microbes as crucial mediators of diet-induced host-microbial cross-talk. Here, we review emerging data suggesting that microbial tryptophan catabolites resulting from proteolysis are ...
