Pyrosequencing analysis of fungal assemblages from geographically distant, disparate soils reveals spatial patterning and a core mycobiome [PDF]
Identifying a soil core microbiome is crucial to appreciate the established microbial consortium, which is not usually subjected to change and, hence, possibly resistant/resilient to disturbances and a varying soil context. Fungi are a major part of soil

A Combinatorial Algorithm for Microbial Consortia Synthetic Design [PDF]
AbstractSynthetic biology has boomed since the early 2000s when it started being shown that it was possible to efficiently synthetize compounds of interest in a much more rapid and effective way by using other organisms than those naturally producing them.

ABSTRACT To address the persistent exceedance of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentrations and the limited effectiveness of existing treatments in the Sickle Bay oil production area, this study deeply analyzes the mechanism of H2S generation in the Sickle Bay oil production area and proposes targeted prevention and control strategies. The results show that

Engineering microbial consortia to enhance biomining and bioremediation [PDF]
In natural environments microorganisms commonly exist as communities of multiple species that are capable of performing more varied and complicated tasks than clonal populations. Synthetic biologists have engineered clonal populations with characteristics such as differentiation, memory, and pattern formation, which are usually associated with more ...

This study demonstrates the thermal expansion behavior of curdlan tripropionate films using thermal mechanical analysis and synchrotron WAXD. Both amorphous and crystalline films show characteristic expansion near the glass transition, providing structural insights for designing heat‐resistant polysaccharide‐based plastics.

The diversity and ecological role of protozoa in fresh waters [PDF]
Protozoa feed on and regulate the abundance of most types of aquatic microorganisms, and they are an integral part of all aquatic microbial food webs. Being so small, aerobic protozoa thrive at low oxygen tensions, where they feed (largely unaffected by ...

Abstract Premise Plants are frequently exposed to combinations of abiotic and biotic stresses that pose a greater threat to yield and productivity than individual stresses. However, knowledge of the impact of many stress combinations in numerous plants is limited due to the lack of experimental data, which could take decades to generate.

Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation and Flocculent Accumulation (MOSSFA) Workshop [PDF]
The MOSSFA hypothesis is that the formation of marine snow/oil aggregates and its accumulation at the seafloor is related to events associated with the oil spill, various mitigation measures (e.g., the use of dispersants and in situ burning), and ...
