Kinetics of chlorine depletion and microbial growth in household plumbing systems [PDF]
To date, the microbial ecology of water treatment and distribution systems has never been systematically explored. Despite chronic problems with microbial growths in water distribution systems, the waterworks literature would indicate that the ...

The Ecology and Evolution of Microbial Competition [PDF]
Microbes are typically surrounded by different strains and species with whom they compete for scarce nutrients and limited space. Given such challenging living conditions, microbes have evolved many phenotypes with which they can outcompete and displace their neighbours: secretions to harvest resources, loss of costly genes whose products can be ...

A Bio‐Inspired Perspective on Materials Sustainability
This perspective discusses natural materials as inspiration for sustainable engineering designs and the processing of materials. First, circularity, longevity, parsimony, and activity are presented as essential material paradigms. The perspective then uses many examples of natural and technical materials to introduce principles such as oligo ...

Effect of Ethanol on Microbial Community Structure and Function During Natural Attenuation of Benzene, Toluene, and \u3cem\u3eo\u3c/em\u3e-Xylene in a Sulfate-reducing Aquifer [PDF]
Ethanol (EtOH) is a commonly used fuel oxygenate in reformulated gasoline and is an alternative fuel and fuel supplement. Effects of EtOH release on aquifer microbial ecology and geochemistry have not been well characterized in situ.

THEORETICAL AND QUANTITATIVE METHODS CONNECTING CHARACTERIZING MICORIBAL METABOLISM DIVERSITY: IMPLCIATIONS FROM PHYLOGENETICS, COMMUNITY DIVERSITY, AND ORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY [PDF]
Biogeochemistry is controlled by microorganisms obtaining nutrients and energy. Thus, microbial metabolisms directly link microbial ecology and geochemistry.

Microbial and metabolic succession on common building materials under high humidity conditions. [PDF]
Despite considerable efforts to characterize the microbial ecology of the built environment, the metabolic mechanisms underpinning microbial colonization and successional dynamics remain unclear, particularly at high moisture conditions. Here, we applied

Society for Microbial Ecology,Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease, and the Future [PDF]
The Society for Microbial Ecology (SOMED) 36th International Conference is now history. As stated by President Andy Onderdonk in the last SOMED newsletter, the meeting was a success. The Organizing Committee, headed by Professor Alojz Bomba, had done a marvellous job.

Microbial ecology of the Southern Ocean
AbstractThe Southern Ocean (SO) distributes climate signals and nutrients worldwide, playing a pivotal role in global carbon sequestration. Microbial communities are essential mediators of primary productivity and carbon sequestration, yet we lack a comprehensive understanding of microbial diversity and functionality in the SO.

This study investigates the antifungal efficacy of ultrashort pulsed laser‐induced periodic surface structures (USP‐DLIP) on copper, brass, and steel surfaces. Using Aspergillus niger as a model, the research highlights a 99% reduction in spore viability on 9 µm structured copper surfaces due to enhanced copper ion release. Scanning electron microscopy
