Microbial indicators of fertility in arable land [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In this thesis eleven microbial variables were evaluated as indicators of soil fertility. The variables were derived from short-incubation tests based on respiration, denitrification, ammonium oxidation, and alkaline phosphatase activity. During the incubation, the formation rate of metabolic end-products or intermediates was recorded and the variables

Biofilm‐Binding Phages Enhance Biofilm Eradication by Synergistic Photothermal and Photodynamic Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Engineered phage‐based trifunctional nanofibers are developed for synergistic biofilm eradication. Biofilm‐binding phages, armed with AuNPs and TCPP, serve as both warheads and scaffolds, endowing the phototherapy agents with biofilm‐anchoring ability. Upon light irradiation, AuNPs induce photothermal therapy, while TCPP generates 1O2 for photodynamic ...

RNAi in the Rhizarian Phytopathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae: The Causal Agent of Clubroot Disease in Cruciferous Crops

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study uncovers an unusual RNAi pathway in the rhizarian pathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae. In the absence of Dicer, a Drosha‐like RNase III protein supports the biogenesis of predominant 21‐nt small RNAs, and two Argonaute proteins mediate small RNA‐guided silencing.

Trophic interactions between zooplankton and the microbial community in contrasting food webs: the epilimnion and deep chlorophyll maximum of a mesotrophic lake

open access: yes, 2018
Trophic interactions between the mesozooplankton and the microbial web (bacteria, protozoa) were studied in 2 in situ grazing experiments in the epilimnion and the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) of a mesotrophic ...

Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...

Friend, Not Foe: Lowered Tissue Reactivity to Long‐Term Polyimide Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The choice of optimal neural probe designs remains a major challenge in the field of neurotechnology. This study investigated the biocompatibility of several probe variations, including material, thickness, width, and implantation strategy. It highlights the clear advantage of soft polyimide probes over stiff silicon probes for better device ...

Spatial comparison of bacterial diversity depending on the size of microbial cell at East-Sea, Korea

open access: yes, 2010
Most research has been conducted on marine microorganisms of which cell size is lager than 0.2μm while there is very few information about bacteria smaller than 0.2μm (Ultramicrobacteria: UMB).

Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry for Quantifying Membrane Fouling: Fouling Layer Structure and Chemical Interaction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (Nano SIMS) is established as a powerful analytical tool to visualize and quantify the membrane fouling layers. ABSTRACT Membrane technology has garnered considerable attention for applications in wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Nevertheless, membrane fouling remains a major barrier, yet the lack of
