Rhodococcus as Biofactories for Microbial Oil Production. [PDF]

open access: yesMolecules, 2021
Bacteria belonging to the Rhodococcus genus are frequent components of microbial communities in diverse natural environments. Some rhodococcal species exhibit the outstanding ability to produce significant amounts of triacylglycerols (TAG) (>20% of cellular dry weight) in the presence of an excess of the carbon source and limitation of the nitrogen ...

Microbial Utilization of Crude Oil [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Microbiology, 1972
The utilization of two crude oil samples of different quality at 4 and 30 C has been studied by using pure and mixed bacterial cultures obtained by enrichment procedures. Growth, emulsification, and utilization occurred readily at both temperatures.

Microbial Destruction Mineral (Oil) Motor Oil [PDF]

open access: yesMikrobiolohichnyi Zhurnal, 2015
In a review information is presented about composition of mineral motor oils and their negative impact on the environment and the ability of microorganisms, in particular actinobacteria, to assimilate hydrocarbon oil components. The role of bacteria is described in the process of cleaning up polluted environments motor oils and the prospect of their ...

Microbial Mineralization of Montmorillonite in Low-Permeability Oil Reservoirs for Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 2018
Microbial mineralization is ubiquitous in the natural environment. Microbes in low-permeability reservoirs are able to facilitate alteration of the structure and phase of the Fe-poor minerals by reducing Fe(III) and inhibiting clay swelling, which is still poorly studied.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

De novo synthesis of short‐chain aldehydes and hydrocarbons secreted by the brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, mainly secretes 4‐oxo‐(E)‐2‐hexenal, (E)‐2‐decenal, dodecane and tridecane, a mixture representative of that released by many heteropterans. We demonstrated that H. halys can synthesise these secretory components de novo using dietary glucose.

Microbial processes in the Athabasca Oil Sands and their potential applications in microbial enhanced oil recovery

open access: yesJournal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology, 2011
The Athabasca Oil Sands are located within the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, which covers over 140,200 km(2) of land in Alberta, Canada. The oil sands provide a unique environment for bacteria as a result of the stressors of low water availability and high hydrocarbon concentrations.

Utilizing the Metastability of Spidroins as a Strategy for Improving Mechanical Properties of Biomimetic Spider Silk Fibers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Phase transitions are central for the assembly of recombinant silk proteins into fibers. Soluble protein can transition into condensed states such as condensates and gels. These states are metastable and evolve in a time‐dependent way. Metastability depends on the protein sequence, and this relationship can be used to enhance the mechanical properties ...
