Virtual Walls in Microchannels
2006 International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2006Microfluidic channels were studied, in which the surface is modified from a solid/liquid interface into solid/liquid and air/liquid alternating interface, creating the equivalent of a superhydrophobic surface on the interior of the channel. The composite microchannel can be easily fabricated using embossing or cast molding of PDMS.

For more than forty years researchers have applied the phenomenon of photoemission to convert absorbed incident radiation into an electron stream, which is then amplified by a secondary-emission process. The resulting fast high-gain photon detectors, such as photomultipliers and electron multipliers, are among the fastest and most sensitive devices for

Bubble dynamics in microchannels. Part I: single microchannel
International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2004Abstract The present work explores experimentally bubble dynamics in a single trapezoid microchannel with a hydraulic diameter of 41.3 μm. The fabrication process of the microchannel employs a silicon bulk micromachining and anodic bounding process.

Electroosmotic mixing in microchannels
Lab on a Chip, 2004Mixing is an essential, yet challenging, process step for many Lab on a Chip (LOC) applications. This paper presents a method of mixing for microfluidic devices that relies upon electroosmotic flow. In physical tests and in computer simulations, we periodically vary the electric field with time to mix two aqueous solutions.

We have investigated the manner in which the gain of a microchannel plate (MCP) changes as the plate is operated at moderate output currents. We find that the total charge per unit area Q (C-cm(-2)) extracted from the MCP is the relevant quantity for evaluating the performance of the MCP.

Microchannel Plate Streak Camera
SPIE Proceedings, 1985The development of a streak camera using a microchannel plate electron multiplier as the cathode is presented. Potential applications to γ-rays, low-energy x-rays, and charged particles are described. Preliminary test shows that 150-ps resolution can be obtained.

Particle Transport in Microchannels
Numerical Heat Transfer, Part B: Fundamentals, 2006A numerical model for particle transport in microchannel is presented. This article focuses on situations where the sizes of the particles are comparable to the sizes of the channels. The present approach is validated against (1) flow around stationary, (2) flow around forced rotating, (3) flow around freely rotating cylinders and (4) sedimentation of ...

Ultrasonic agitation in microchannels
Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2004This paper describes an acoustic method for inducing rotating vortex flows in microchannels. An ultrasonic crystal is used to create an acoustic standing wave field in the channel and thus induce a Rayleigh flow transverse to the laminar flow in the channel. Mixing in microchannels is strictly diffusion-limited because of the laminar flow, a transverse
