The FEBS Journal, EarlyView.When overexpressed in Staphylococcus aureus, the type I toxins SprA1 and SprA2 form membrane pores, with SprA1 creating stable pores and SprA2 forming transient ones. Both induce concomitant membrane depolarization, ATP release, and growth arrest, while only SprA1 causes membrane permeabilization due to its stable pore formation.
