ABSTRACT Objective To systematically review the structural features of secreted frizzled‑related protein 5 (SFRP5) and its dual regulation of canonical/non‑canonical Wnt signaling, analyze its association with metabolic disorders, and specifically explore the role and mechanisms of the SFRP5–lipid metabolism axis in neural and optic nerve development ...

First report of microcystins in Taiwan [PDF]
This is the first report on microcystins from Microcystis aeruginosa Kützing in Taiwan. A total of nine strains of cyanobacteria have been isolated from eutrophic aquaculture ponds and water reservoirs. By mouse toxicity assay, six of the nine strains had LD100 in the range of 25-100 mg per kg mouse for dried bacterial mass. Microcystin-LR and -RR were

A novel mat‐forming benthic freshwater cyanobacterium, Limnofasciculus delicatus, is described based on morphological, phylogenetic and genomic evidence from the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River. Although Limnofasciculus delicatus lacks biosynthetic gene clusters associated with the production of known cyanotoxins, it occurs in association

Transcriptional alteration of cytoskeletal genes induced by microcystins in three organs of rats [PDF]
This study explored the mechanisms of toxicity of microcystins by measuring the transcription levels of nine cytoskeletal genes (actin, tubulin, vimentin, ezrin, radixin, moesin, MAP1b, tau, stathmin) in the liver, kidney and spleen of male Wistar rats ...

Adsorption of microcystins by carbon nanotubes [PDF]
The production of cyanobacterial toxins microcystins (MCs) by cyanobacterial bloom which may promote the growth of tumor in human liver is a growing environmental problem worldwide. In this paper, the adsorption of MC-RR and LR, which were extracted from cyanobacterial cells in Dianchi Lake in China, by carbon nanotubes (CNTs), wood-based activated ...

Abstract Cyanotoxins such as microcystin (MC), cylindrospermopsin, and saxitoxin are secondary metabolites that are rich in nitrogen (N). Most cyanobacteria grow best on reduced inorganic N (ammonium, NH4), but when NH4 is absent, cyanobacteria can activate physiological pathways to process other N forms (e.g., nitrate; NO3).

Abstract Cyanobacteria are cosmopolitan, important components of biomass with a remarkable ability to synthesize a diverse array of bioactive compounds, some of which may have toxic effects on other organisms and ecosystems. In this study, filamentous cyanobacterial strains isolated predominantly from temperate European freshwaters (Aphanizomenon ...

Purification and identification of microcystin-RR [PDF]
An effective method based on the combination of solid phase extraction and gel chromatography to extract and purify microcystin-RR (MC-RR) from natural cyanobacteria bloom was developed. Thirty five gram natural cyanobacterial bloom scum was extracted with 70% aqueous methanol. After the methanol in the crude extract was removed by a rotary evaporator,
