Ivermectin and diethylcarbamazine (DEC) are used in mass treatment programs for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis because of their strong effects on microfilaremia. However, the effects of treatment on adult worms and the degree of individual variation in efficacy are unclear.

The periodicity of microfilariae III.Transfusion of microfilariae into a clean host
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1953Abstract Microfilariae of Dirofilaria repens were transfused intravenously into a clean dog.In the new host they showed well marked nocturnal periodicity similar to that shown in the donor dog, although no adult worms were present in the recipient. This confirms the conclusion previously reached on other grounds that the periodicity of microfilariae ...

Filariasis is an important public health problem in India, and 40% of the worldwide disease burden is borne by India. Renal involvement occurs as chyluria, hematuria, proteinuria, and an immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis. Here, we present an unusual case who presented with sepsis (secondary to pneumonia) with acute kidney injury, hematuria ...

Abstract 1. 1) Acetylcholine (intravenous) and carbachol (intramuscular) cause a rise in the microfilaria count of Dirofilaria immitis and of D. repens in dogs., i.e., they cause liberation of microfilariae from the lungs. This effect is partially antagonized by the previous administration of atropine. Acetylcholine has no obvious effect upon

Concomitant microfilaria and malaria infection
Blood, 2013![Figure][1] A 34-year-old man from India presented with a 1-month history of intermittent high-grade fevers, generalized weakness, and cough. The patient had a history of being treated for malaria. He was lethargic but vitally stable.

Abstract The conventional method of detecting and counting microfilariae has been to prepare ‘thick’ smears of either measured or unmeasured quantities of blood. When I first started work on filariasis in the laboratory I found this technique laborious and slow and began using the chamber system which was subsequently described and ...

Distribution of microfilariae in Guatemalans with onchocerciasis
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1983Ten Simulium ochraceum were allowed to feed at 10 different sites on 12 Guatemalans with onchocerciasis, and skin snips were taken from six of these sites. Numbers of microfilariae (mff) ingested by the flies and mff emerging from skin snips were highly correlated and showed that concentrations were greatest on the torso and decreased peripherally.
