NEX4EX – A novel exercise device enabling resistive, plyometric and sensorimotor training during deep‐space missions: A case report

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract During weightlessness, the human neuro–muscular–skeletal system undergoes maladaptation to the microgravity environment. The European Space Agency (ESA) project NEX4EX, ‘Novel Exercise Hardware for Exploration’, developed an advanced multipurpose exerciser offering resistive (RES), plyometric (PLYO) and sensorimotor (SENSO) exercises.

Spatial orientation under microgravity

open access: yesRinsho Shinkeigaku, 2012
On Earth, humans are constantly exposed to the gravity. During head and body tilts, the otolith organs sense changes in head orientation with respect to the gravitational vertical. These graviceptors also transduce transient linear acceleration generated by translational head motion and centripetal acceleration during rotation about a distant axis ...

Blood flow restriction exercise during microgravity exposure in parabolic flight

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract This case report evaluates whether it is possible to perform blood flow restriction (BFR) exercise during exposure to microgravity. The objectives were three‐fold: (1) to determine if a personalised tourniquet system (PTS) hardware technology performs nominally and enables BFR exercise in microgravity; (2) to determine if BFR augments the ...

Effects of Microgravity on the Monocyte/Macrophage Physiology and the Potential Implication in Immune Responses to Vaccines

open access: yesVaccine Research, 2019
Introduction: Exposure to the microgravity environment could cause human physiological abnormalities that include fluid shift, anemia, osteoporosis, immunosuppression, etc. Monocytes and macrophages are important components of the immune system and could

The effects of bed rest on cardiometabolic health: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Horizontal bed rest (HBR) and head‐down tilt (HDT) are models of physical inactivity. In this systematic review and meta‐analysis, we aimed to quantify changes in cardiometabolic outcomes during HBR and HDT in healthy adults. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library until 1 October 2025 ...
