Integrated mechanics for the passive damping of polymer-matrix composites and composite structures [PDF]

open access: yes
Some recent developments on integrated damping mechanics for unidirectional composites, laminates, and composite structures are reviewed. Simplified damping micromechanics relate the damping of on-axis and off-axis composites to constituent properties ...

Microstructure-based modeling of elastic functionally graded materials: One dimensional case

open access: yes, 2008
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are two-phase composites with continuously changing microstructure adapted to performance requirements. Traditionally, the overall behavior of FGMs has been determined using local averaging techniques or a given ...

Novel Recyclable Hierarchical Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites: Preserving Fiber Length and Orientation Using Elium

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of a hierarchical recycling approach that preserves reinforcing fiber orientation. ABSTRACT Current recycling methods for polymer matrix composites produce short, unoriented carbon fibers, limiting their use to intermediate‐strength applications.

Generalized Finite-volume Micromechanics Theory for Heterogeneous Materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In the last decades, new generations of advanced materials have been designed and manufactured for specific applications. Micromechanics of heterogeneous materials plays an important role in the development of these materials, enabling efficient analyses of composite materials with complex geometries, circumventing the traditional trial-and-error ...

Developing a Heterogeneous Attenuation Model for Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites in the Kilohertz Region of the Ultrasonic Spectrum

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Acquisition, filtering and modeling by genetic programming (tree pattern) of the acoustic signal for fiber‐filled composites. ABSTRACT This study experimentally investigated the discrete phase contributions of fibers and entrapped air on the attenuation spectrum of a fiber‐filled thermoplastic composite and derives a mathematical expression for sound ...

The Role of Interfacial Shear Strength in Composite Performance

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Plasma‐modified fibre interfaces: effects on interfacial shear strength and composite fracture behaviour. ABSTRACT This study investigates the role of interfacial shear strength (ISS) in governing the mechanical behavior of fiber‐reinforced composites through an experimental approach.

Work fluctuations in a nonlinear micromechanical oscillator driven far from thermal equilibrium

open access: yes, 2015
We explore fluctuation relations in a periodically driven micromechanical torsional oscillator. In the linear regime where the modulation is weak, we verify that the ratio of the work variance to the mean work is constant, consistent with conventional ...

Influence of Temperature on the Reliability of Graphene‐Based Ozone Sensors

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
The reliability and stability of inkjet‐printed graphene flake sensors are evaluated. Stress assessments take place in ozone‐rich environments and at elevated temperatures, with the observation of a change in resistance. Surface‐sensitive techniques serve to investigate the failure and degradation mechanisms of printed graphene.
