Microorganisms and cyanide

open access: yesBacteriological Reviews, 1976
The susceptibility of cytochrome oxidases to cyanide means that cyanide is toxic to living cells and cyanide pollution causes great damage to microbial and other ecosystems. Cyanide pollution comes from both industrial wastes and a number of plants, many of agricultural importance, which are cyanogenic and release cyanide into the soil.

Turbulent fluid acceleration generates clusters of gyrotactic microorganisms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The motility of microorganisms is often biased by gradients in physical and chemical properties of their environment, with myriad implications on their ecology.

Ultra‐Shallow Flat Heat Waves on Low Thermal Conductivity Flexible Polyimide Substrate for Millisecond Thermal Analysis of Materials and Bioelectronic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An electronic system is presented consisting of a silver thin‐film electrode on a polyimide substrate working both as a heating element and a resistive temperature sensor, generating millisecond heat pulses with very fast heating and cooling rates and a flat peak temperature with a tunable duration.

A taxonomic framework for emerging groups of ecologically important marine gammaproteobacteria based on the reconstruction of evolutionary relationships using genome-scale data

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2015
In recent years a large number of isolates were obtained from saline environments that are phylogenetically related to distinct clades of oligotrophic marine gammaproteobacteria, which were originally identified in seawater samples using cultivation ...

Diverse syntrophic partnerships from deep-sea methane vents revealed by direct cell capture and metagenomics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Microorganisms play a fundamental role in the cycling of nutrients and energy on our planet. A common strategy for many microorganisms mediating biogeochemical cycles in anoxic environments is syntrophy, frequently necessitating close spatial proximity ...

Fluorinated Graphene‐Coated N95 Respirators for Enhanced Protection against Viral Accumulation and Transmission

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a one‐step spray coating approach to coat the fluorinated graphene (FG) nanosheet onto the N95 respirators. The spray‐coated superhydrophobic N95 respirators can effectively repel respiratory droplets off instantaneously and prevent SARS‐CoV‐2 virus accumulation on the surface.

Analyzing the G3BP-like gene family of Arabidopsis thaliana in early turnip mosaic virus infection

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
The Arabidopsis thaliana genome encodes several genes that are known or predicted to participate in the formation of stress granules (SG). One family of genes encodes for Ras GTPase-activating protein–binding protein (G3BP)-like proteins.

The hydrodynamics of swimming microorganisms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Cell motility in viscous fluids is ubiquitous and affects many biological processes, including reproduction, infection and the marine life ecosystem. Here we review the biophysical and mechanical principles of locomotion at the small scales relevant to ...
