The effect of polypropylene on the formation of byssal threads produced by Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussels) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The presence of microfibers and microplastics in the environment is an ever-growing ecological concern. Accumulation of microplastics (plastic particles smaller than 5 mm) in aquatic environments and the subsequent exposure of these particles to ...

Litter Windrows in the South-East Coast of the Bay of Biscay: An Ocean Process Enabling Effective Active Fishing for Litter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Large scale convergence regions of floating marine litter are commonly observed in semi-enclosed seas as the Bay of Biscay. However, clean-up activities on such accumulation regions are limited by the spread of the large-size floating litter on the sea ...

Sustainable Smart Packaging from Protein Nanofibrils

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Smart packaging can extend shelf life and improve food quality monitoring. This study introduces a novel smart packaging solution using amyloid fibrils and red radish anthocyanins to monitor seafood spoilage. These findings show that these films effectively indicate shrimp freshness and possess high antibacterial and antioxidant properties, offering a ...

Cleanly Removable and Degradable Bio‐Based Adhesive for Flexible Displays

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Sustainable acrylic optically clear adhesives (OCAs) for foldable displays are developed by incorporating ultraviolet (UV)‐triggered debondability and lipoic acid–based degradability through visible‐light‐induced bulk polymerization. These OCAs enable residue‐free removal and degrade into small oligomers or recoverable monomers under mild conditions ...

State of the Art Offshore In Situ Monitoring of Microplastic

open access: yesMicroplastics, 2022
Microplastics make up a significant amount of the overall quantity of plastic debris that is present in seawater. However, their detection and monitoring at sea is cost-inefficient and challenging; typically, it consists of water sampling with special ...

Airborne hydrophilic microplastics in cloud water at high altitudes and their role in cloud formation

open access: yesEnvironmental Chemistry Letters, 2023
Microplastic pollution is occurring in most ecosystem, yet their presence in high altitude clouds and their influence on cloud formation and climate change are poorly known.

Polystyrene Nanoplastic‐Mercury Complexes Detection by Electrolyte‐Gated Carbon Nanotube Field‐Effect Transistor‐Based Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
An electrolyte‐gated field effect transistor sensor is used to detect an environmentally relevant nanoplastic model. The sensor identifies the presence of polystyrene nanoplastics in water dispersions without significantly altering its performance in the presence of mercury on the nanoplastics’ surface, indicating that it may be utilized in ...

Structures of Polyhydroxyalkanoate Synthase PhaC from Aeromonas caviae, Producing Biodegradable Plastics

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
PHA synthase (PhaC) is the key enzyme in the polymerization of a biodegradable plastic—polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). Structures of full‐length PhaC reveal three key regions essential for substrate specificity and polymerization. Additionally, this study also highlights the critical role of N‐domain‐dependent dimerization in PhaC activity.

Microplastics and their interactions with microbiota

open access: yesHeliyon, 2023
As a new pollutant, Microplastics (MPs) are globally known for their negative impacts on different ecosystems and living organisms. MPs are easily taken up by the ecosystem in a variety of organisms due to their small size, and cause immunological, neurological, and respiratory diseases in the impacted organism.
