Assessing Fish Community Structure and Diversity Across Environmental Gradients in a Tropical Bay

open access: yesMarine Ecology, Volume 46, Issue 2, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Understanding the relationship between species distribution and the environment across spatial gradients is crucial for biodiversity evaluation. We surveyed fish populations in a tropical bay, covering a spatial gradient from the outer zone with favorable marine conditions to the inner zone affected by human activities.

Hyperostosis in Fishes: An Update With New Species Records

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 285, Issue 11, November 2024.
Hyperostosis is an enigmatic dimension of diversity in the anatomy of fishes. This excessive overgrowth of bone is natural in origin, occurs almost exclusively in marine fishes, is generally species‐specific, and becomes fully developed only in large individuals. We document hyperostosis in 35 families, 89 genera, and 153 species.

Observations on the Infection by Kudoa sp. (Myxozoa, Multivalvulida) in fishes caught off Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2016
It is reported the parasitization of Kudoa sp. (Myxozoa, Multivalvulida) within the somatic muscles of the fish Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835), Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823) and Mugil liza Valenciennes, 1836, captured off Rio ...

Gillnet selectivity for whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) from southeastern and southern Brazil

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2016
The whitemouth croaker is one of the most important demersal resources of southeast and southern Brazil, and it is caught mostly by bottom gillnets. This fishing system has the advantage of a unimodal distribution of size selectivity, where the optimum length corresponds to the mode of the distribution.

Re‐evaluation of certain aspects of the EFSA Scientific Opinion of April 2010 on risk assessment of parasites in fishery products, based on new scientific data. Part 2

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The objective of this opinion was to determine if any wild caught fish species, originating from specific fishing grounds and consumed in the EU/EFTA could be considered free of zoonotic parasites. In this Opinion the term ‘fishery products’ only refers to fresh finfish.

Update of the risk assessment of brominated phenols and their derivatives in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2012 risk assessment on brominated phenols and their derivatives in food, focusing on five bromophenols and one derivative: 2,4,6‐tribromophenol (2,4,6‐TBP), 2,4‐dibromophenol (2,4‐DBP), 4‐bromophenol (4‐BP), 2,6‐dibromophenol (2,6‐DBP), tetrabrominated bisphenol S (TBBPS), tetrabromobisphenol S

Dietary metabarcoding of keystone sardine species reveals the importance of their ichthyoplankton prey in food webs of the Southern Brazilian Bight fisheries

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 33, Issue 4, July 2024.
Abstract Clupeiform fishes are ecologically and economically important species contributing to industrial and artisanal fisheries worldwide. They represent key links in food webs, influencing the dynamic between trophic levels. The dietary interactions of these species are poorly studied in many regions, yet essential for fisheries management.
