Microscopy underestimates submicroscopic malaria infections in Ethiopia’s southern rift valley: a community-based cross-sectional study

open access: yesMalaria Journal
Background Efforts to control malaria face several challenges, including the presence of parasite reservoirs within the community that contribute to disease transmission.

Phenol-ammonium sulfate microscopy method for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mycobacteriology, 2013
Background: Collection and processing of sputum samples for the detection of acid fast bacilli (AFB) is hazardous for health-workers in developing countries with limited facilities.

Diagnosis of smear-negative tuberculosis is greatly improved by Xpert MTB/RIF. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
BACKGROUND:Diagnosis of pulmonary (PTB) and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in smear-negative patients can be difficult. We assessed retrospectively the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF system (Xpert, Cepheid) in diagnosing smear-negative tuberculosis ...

Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Neutralization of the PTX3/CD44 axis suppresses TGF‐β1 signaling in kidney fibrosis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study investigates how the PTX3/CD44 axis promotes kidney fibrosis by activating TGF‐β1 signaling. We demonstrate that the neutralizing antibody WHC‐001 effectively inhibits this pathway, suppressing myofibroblast activation and partial epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Tuberculosis Transmission by Patients with Smear- Negative Pulmonary Tuberculosis in a Large Cohort in The Netherlands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background. Sputum smear microscopy is commonly used for diagnosing tuberculosis (TB). Although patients with sputum smear-negative TB are less infectious than patients with smear-positive TB, they also contribute to TB transmission.

Inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase 7 impairs lysophagy in LLOMe‐treated HepG2 cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
DPP7 inhibition delays ubiquitin‐dependent lysophagy by attenuating ubiquitin accumulation and the recruitment of SQSTM1 and LC3 to damaged lysosomes, resulting in delayed clearance of damaged lysosomes and impaired restoration of lysosomal homeostasis. Created using FigureLabs (Certificate ID: FL‐PUB‐20260922‐Z99XNX).

High proportions of pfhrp2 gene deletion and performance of HRP2-based rapid diagnostic test in Plasmodium falciparum field isolates of Odisha

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2018
Background With the documentation of cases of falciparum malaria negative by rapid diagnostic tests (RDT), though at low frequency from natural isolates in a small pocket of Odisha, it became absolutely necessary to investigate the status of HRP-2 based ...

Soft motions encoded by the fold and mediated by conserved hinge sites drive V‐ATPase allosteric machinery and autoinhibition

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Vacuolar H+‐ATPase (V‐ATPase) is a multisubunit rotary proton pump that acidifies intracellular compartments. Using elastic network models, we identified conserved hinge residues that govern its large‐scale functional motions. We show that intrinsically encoded ‘soft modes’ drive critical functional transitions, including rotary catalysis and ...
