Applications of microstructured fibers : supercontinua and novel components [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Microstructured fibers are a special class of pure-silica optical fibers. They consist of a silica core, surrounded by a periodic array of air-holes running along the entire length of the fiber.

Four‐Point Bending Tests at High Temperatures on Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks with and Without Recyclate Considering Different Carbon Contents

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Four‐point bending tests are conducted in an argon atmosphere on commercial MgO‐C brick grades with and without MgO‐C recyclate from room temperature up to 1300 °C. No detrimental effect of the MgO‐C recyclates on bending strength is found. Instead, a decisive influence of the total carbon content is observed, with lower total carbon contents ...

Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

PROCESS METHODS WITH LOW LEVEL OF OPTICAL LOSSES FOR THE MICROSTRUCTURED FIBER LIGHT GUIDES [PDF]

open access: yesНаучно-технический вестник информационных технологий, механики и оптики, 2014
The paper deals with results of the technology process development for the microstructured fiber light guides. Light guides with one or two cycles of the openings, processed by two-phase technology were created during carried out research. The use of two

Hydrostatic Pressure Sensing with High Birefringence Photonic Crystal Fibers

open access: yesSensors, 2010
The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the waveguiding properties of high birefringence photonic crystal fibers (HiBi PCF) is evaluated both numerically and experimentally.

Fiber-optical analogue of the event horizon

open access: yes, 2008
The physics at the event horizon resembles the behavior of waves in moving media. Horizons are formed where the local speed of the medium exceeds the wave velocity.

Assessing Altered Coating Adhesion on Plasma‐Deoxidized Surfaces Under Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment in modifying silicon and stainless steel surfaces to improve adhesion. Argon‐hydrogen plasma increases surface roughness and improves adhesion strength, whereas pure argon results in smoother surfaces and structural changes.

Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Deoxidation of Natively Oxide Layer of Copper Powders in a Fluidized Bed

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a novel approach to reducing oxide layers on metal powders using low‐temperature hydrogen dielectric barrier discharge plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Unlike conventional hydrogen‐plasma reductions, the powders do not contact the plasma directly.

Elaboration by additive manufacturing of microstructured optical fibers for infrared sensing application

open access: yesOptical Materials: X
Additive manufacturing offers new opportunities for designing complex glass preforms that cannot be achieved by conventional methods. In this work, we demonstrate the fabrication of microstructured chalcogenide-glass fibers for mid-infrared sensing using
