Highly tunable birefringent microstructured optical fiber

Optics Letters, 2002
We demonstrate a method for introducing and dynamically tuning birefringence in a microstructured optical fiber. Waveguide asymmetry in the fiber is obtained by selective filling of air holes with polymer, and tunability is achieved by temperature tuning of the polymer's index. The fiber is tapered such that the mode field expands into the cladding and

Mechanical Strength of Microstructured Optical Fibers

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2014
An experimental study of the mechanical reliability of microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) is reported. Tensile tests were carried on five types of MOFs and two reference fibers, and the tensile strengths were analyzed using Weibull statistics. Optical microscopy of the surfaces of rupture allowed identifying the critical flaws and determining the ...

Hollow-core microstructured polymer optical fiber

Optics Letters, 2006
We have fabricated microstructured polymer optical fibers that guide light in a hollow core using the photonic bandgap mechanism. The hollow core allows the use of polymer fibers to be extended to wavelength ranges where material absorption typically prohibits their use, with attenuation lower than the material loss observed in the infrared.

Microstructured optical fiber refractive index sensor

Optics Letters, 2010
We describe a dual-core microstructured optical fiber designed for refractive index sensing of fluids. We show that by using the exponential dependence of intercore coupling on analyte refractive index, both large range and high sensitivity can be achieved in the one device.

Optical fiber gratings written in microstructured optical fibers

2012 Photonics Global Conference (PGC), 2012
Microstructured optical fibers are usually divided into two different types of fibers: solid-core Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and air-core photonic bandgaps fibers (PBGs). This paper presents the fabrication methods and applications of optical fiber gratings written in both solid-core PCFs and air-core PBGs. A sensitive stain sensor was demonstrated

Optical properties of microstructured optical fibers

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
ABSTRACT In conventional optical fibers the light guiding and other optical properties are mainly controlled by the index profile as given by the composition of the doping materials. In this case technological and material properties limit the design flexibility of the optical properties. For example, it is not possible to shift the region of anomalous

Microstructured Optical Fibers

2006
This chapter explores microstructured optical fibers that have now developed to the point where they are not only of interest from a research perspective, but are also becoming available commercially. This chapter demonstrates that good quality index guiding holey fibers (HFs) and photonic bandgap fibers (PBGFs) based on a cladding structure with a ...

Transverse light guides in microstructured optical fibers

Optics Letters, 2006
A novel class of microstructured optical fiber coupler is introduced that operates by resonant, rather than proximity, energy transfer by means of transverse light guides built into a fiber cross section. Such a design permits significant spatial separation between interacting fibers, which, in turn, eliminates intercore cross talk owing to proximity ...

Plasmonic microstructured optical fibers

2015 17th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2015
Placing large aspect-ratio nanowires made from metals into fibers leads to new application areas of optical fibers. Using our pressure-assisted melt-filling approach various hybrid fibers have been fabricated by filling the air holes of photonic crystal fibers with materials such as noble metals, semiconductors, fluids or low-melting compound glasses ...

3D printed microstructured optical fibers

2017 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference (IMOC), 2017
In this investigation we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first realization of air-core optical fibers obtained by drawing a 3D printed preform. Two different optical fibers are presented. Descriptions on the preform preparation and fiber drawing are provided, and our preliminary results are presented.
