Midgut-derived NPF controls mating-induced GSC proliferation.
A model illustrating the mechanism based on this study. SP signaling induces NPF release from midgut EECs. NPF positively controls pMad expression in GSCs to induce GSC proliferation via ovarian NPFR. BMP, bone morphogenetic protein; EEC, enteroendocrine

Exploring the midgut physiology of the non-haematophagous mosquito Toxorhynchites theobaldi
Toxorhynchites mosquitoes have an exclusively phytophagous feeding habit as adults, which leads to significant differences in their morphophysiology compared with haematophagous mosquitoes.

Role of SoxE transcription factors in development and disease
Abstract Sox8, Sox9, and Sox10 arose by multiple rounds of genome duplications from a single SoxE gene in ancestral vertebrates. In this review, we will briefly discuss the molecular structure and function of SoxE transcription factors and their evolutionary origin. We will then discuss their expression, function, and developmental disorders.

ABSTRACT Somatostatin receptors (SSTR) mediate the antiproliferative, antisecretory, and proapoptotic effects of somatostatin and its synthetic analogs. Their surface expression on neuroendocrine tumor (NET) cells is required for somatostatin analog therapy and radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT).

A megalin-like receptor is involved in protein endocytosis by Bombyx mori midgut cells in culture
Protein absorption by the insect midgut currently attracts increasing research efforts, in part fostered by the need to develop efficient strategies for oral delivery of bioinsecticides targeting haemocoelic receptors.

The alkaline environment, pH approximately 11, in the anterior midgut lumen of mosquito larvae is essential for normal nutrition and development. The mechanism of alkalization is, however, unknown.

An alternative mode of epithelial polarity in the Drosophila midgut
Apical-basal polarity is essential for the formation and function of epithelial tissues, whereas loss of polarity is a hallmark of tumours. Studies in Drosophila have identified conserved polarity factors that define the apical (Crumbs, Stardust, Par-6 ...

Soil‐derived, gut‐dominant generalist bacteria shape the fitness of folivorous larvae
Whether Lepidoptera harbor a conserved core gut microbiome has long remained contentious. Through large‐scale microbiome profiling of folivorous larvae, their host plants, and associated soils across three climatically distinct regions of China, we identify two soil‐derived generalist bacteria, Ralstonia insidiosa and Delftia sp., that colonize 97.92 ...

De novo apical domain formation inside the Drosophila adult midgut epithelium
In the adult Drosophila midgut, basal intestinal stem cells give rise to enteroblasts that integrate into the epithelium as they differentiate into enterocytes.
