In this study, three types of abrasives and several types of heat treatments and materials were used to obtain 11 different abrasive/material hardness (Ha/Hm) ratios with the aim of elucidating the effect of the Ha/Hm ratio on the mild-severe wear transition in erosion wear.

Mild wear maps for boundary lubricated contacts

In this study a model capable of predicting a mild wear map for boundary lubricated contacts is presented and validated using model experiments. Both the transition from mild to severe wear as mild wear itself is modeled. The criterion for the transition from mild to severe wear is a thermal one.

Aluminium-silicon alloy, an important material used for the construction of internal combustion engines, exhibit pressure induced distinct regimes of wear and friction; ultra-mild and mild. In this work the alloy is slid lubricated against a spherical steel pin at contact pressures characteristic of the two test regimes, at a very low sliding velocity.

The mild wear of 52100 steel

Abstract We have measured the weight changes that take place when a martensitic 52100 steel ball slides against a ferritic 52100 steel disc under small loads and at low sliding velocities. The results show that metal is transferred from the ball and appears on the disc as metal oxide.

Transition of Mild Wear to Severe Wear in Oxidative Wear of H21 Steel

Under atmospheric conditions at 400 °C, we studied the wear mechanism of H21 steel with different tempering states as a function of normal load. Typical oxidative wear was identified by X-ray diffraction patterns with predominant tribo-oxides of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3.

The role of carbon in lubricated mild wear

Abstract This paper examines how carbon black (CB) can be used in the study of bore polishing mechanisms. Wear testing was carried out on a modified friction machine with a plane-on-plane combination. The results show a correlation between wear rate and degree of polishing.
