Using Mimicry to Learn about Mental Representations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
Phonology typically describes speech in terms of discrete signs like features. The field of intonational phonology uses discrete accents to describe intonation and prosody. But, are such representations useful? The results of mimicry experiments indicate that discrete signs are not a useful representation of the shape of intonation contours.

Mimicry: Towards the Reproducibility of GAN Research [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Advancing the state of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) research requires one to make careful and accurate comparisons with existing works. Yet, this is often difficult to achieve in practice when models are often implemented differently using varying frameworks, and evaluated using different procedures even when the same metric is used.

Unidirectional Focusing of Light Using Structured Diffractive Surfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a reciprocal diffractive unidirectional focusing design based on linear and isotropic layers. A set of cascaded diffractive layers is designed using deep learning to achieve efficient forward light focusing while suppressing backward propagation across various illumination angles.

Mid-Air Drawing of Curves on 3D Surfaces in Virtual Reality [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Complex 3D curves can be created by directly drawing mid-air in immersive environments (Augmented and Virtual Realities). Drawing mid-air strokes precisely on the surface of a 3D virtual object, however, is difficult; necessitating a projection of the mid-air stroke onto the user "intended" surface curve.

Chemical AI in the Limelight: The Contribution of Photochromic Materials and Oscillatory Chemical Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Photochromic compounds are versatile ingredients for the development of Chemical AI. When they are embedded in a tight microenvironment, they become Markov blankets. They are also valuable for processing Boolean and Fuzzy logic. They contribute to neuromorphic engineering in wetware based on opto‐chemical signals exchanged with oscillatory chemical ...

Implications of holdfast availability and patchiness on juvenile seahorse (Hippocampus reidi) condition and welfare: Simulations in captivity

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 2, Issue 6, Page 552-561, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Seahorses (Genus Hippocampus; Family Syngnathidae) are iconic fish characterised by tails with prehensile capabilities, which develop after the transition from planktonic to benthonic lifestyle. As a result, seahorses remain attached to vegetal structures or other elements most of the time, both in the wild and under rearing conditions. In the

Exploring the Temporal Dynamics of Facial Mimicry in Emotion Processing Using Action Units [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Facial mimicry - the automatic, unconscious imitation of others' expressions - is vital for emotional understanding. This study investigates how mimicry differs across emotions using Face Action Units from videos and participants' responses. Dynamic Time Warping quantified the temporal alignment between participants' and stimuli's facial expressions ...

Femtosecond Pulse Shaping with Semiconductor Huygens' Metasurfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Spatially variant silicon Huygens' metasurfaces enable femtosecond pulse shaping by tailoring the spectral phase and amplitude of incident pulses. Two key functionalities are demonstrated: temporal stretching and pulse splitting of an input Gaussian pulse.
