Establishment of a coculture system for Porphyromonas gingivalis and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using spheroid culture and LATS inhibition

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We established a spheroid coculture system enabling viable Porphyromonas gingivalis–HNSCC interactions under normoxic conditions. Inhibition of LATS1/2 maintains tumor cells in an undifferentiated state, which may promote spheroid growth and create a more permissive environment for bacterial persistence.

Antibiofilm activity of a chionodracine‐derived peptide by NMR‐based metabolomics of cell‐free supernatant of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical strains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KHS‐Cnd peptide is able to impair biofilm formation and disaggregate mature biofilms in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. Differences in extracellular metabolites reflect changes in biofilm metabolism due to KHS‐Cnd treatment. Among the differentially represented extracellular metabolites upon KHS‐Cnd treatment, the significantly altered ...

Tropical range extending herbivorous fishes gain foraging benefits by shoaling with native temperate species

open access: yesScientific Reports
Tropicalization creates novel species assemblages in temperate ecosystems as range-extending species move. The sociality of range-extending species could facilitate their establishment, particularly if they associate with natives.

ATP13A2 is involved in intracellular polyamine transport in lung epithelial cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Spermidine transport in lung epithelial cells involves the polyamine transporter ATP13A2. Cell proliferation is associated with the upregulation of ATP13A2. Polyamines are present in all living cells and are implicated in various crucial cellular processes such as proliferation, apoptosis and autophagy.

Phenotypic Variation of the Invasive Plant Ageratum conyzoides and Analysis of Its Competitiveness With the Co‐Occurring Indigenous Species Perilla frutescens

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Ageratum conyzoides is a malignant invasive plant in China. In this study, we sought to clarify the phenotypic variation of this plant and its competitive interaction with the indigenous species Perilla frutescens .

Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

Socio-ecological factors shaping mixed-species groups

open access: yes, 2020
Understanding why individuals form groups that are strikingly diversein their organisation is a central focus in evolutionary ecology. Although mixed-species groups, where members of different species interact and move together, are common across animal taxa, inter-species interactions have often been a point of secondary interest in the study of ...

Evaluation of in vitro toxicity of common phytochemicals included in weight loss supplements using 1H NMR spectroscopy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We investigated the toxicity of 12 active compounds commonly found in herbal weight loss supplements (WLS) using human liver and colon cell models. Epigallocatechin‐3‐gallate was the only compound showing significant toxicity. Metabolic profiling revealed protein degradation, disrupted energy and lipid metabolism suggesting that the inclusion of EGCG ...

Optimizing Entomofauna Sampling: A Multi-Stimulus Trap for Sustainable Pest Management in Agroforestry

open access: yesEntomoBrasilis
Monitoring insect diversity is crucial for understanding ecosystem dynamics and supporting sustainable agricultural practices. Efficient trapping methods are essential tools for assessing entomofauna in complex agroforestry systems.
