Regulation of the Adrenal and Gonadal Microsomal Mixed Function Oxygenases of Steroid Hormone Biosynthesis

Annual Review of Physiology, 1983
The microsomal steroidogenic enzymes catalyze reactions important in determining both the quantity and the identity of glandular secretory prod ucts. By determining cell function, changes in the rates of these reactions can effect differentiation. The recognition of these control points in steroid hormone biosynthesis lagged because major research ...

Effects of horminone on liver mixed function mono-oxygenases and glutathione enzyme activities of Wistar Rat

Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 1997
The present study reports on the effects of horminone on serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels, on hepatic cytochrome P450 (P450) and cytochrome b5 (cyt b5) contents and on the activities of NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase (NR), mixed function mono-oxygenases (MFO), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and ...

Transplacental induction of mixed-function oxygenases in extra-hepatic tissues by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin

Biochemical Pharmacology, 1977
Abstract Treatment of pregnant rats with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- p -dioxin (TCDD) resulted in a dose-dependent induction of a mixed-function oxidase system in fetal and maternal extra-hepatic tissues. At doses of 6 μmg/kg, aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity was increased 24-, 22- and 4-fold in fetal lung, kidney and skin, respectively ...

Comparison of liver mixed-function oxygenase and antioxidant enzymes in vertebrates

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2004
We performed a comparative analysis of cytochrome P450, cytochrome b5, MFO associated enzymes and cytosolic antioxidant enzymes in hepatic microsomes and cytosolic fractions prepared from five animal species representing three vertebrate classes living in tropical conditions (Brazil).

Review and perspective on the use of mixed-function oxygenase enzymes in biological monitoring

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Comparative Pharmacology, 1987
It is often suggested that changes in simple biochemical/physiological responses may be useful for predicting the impacts of pollutants at population and community levels of biological organization. There are serious conceptual constraints to such a thesis and its seems likely that such simple responses can go no further than serving as early warning ...

Mixed-function oxygenase system and benzo[a]pyrene metabolism in echinoderms

Marine Environmental Research, 1989
Abstract A comparative study on the presence of a mixed-function oxygenase (MFO) system was carried out on four echinoderm species: the asteroids Asterias rubens and Marthasterias glacialis , an echinoid Echinus esculentus and a holothurian Holothuria forskali . In A.

Responses of channel catfish to xenobiotics: Induction and partial characterization of a mixed function oxygenase

Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1983
The effects of the environmental pollutant benzo(a)pyrene (BP) were assessed on the hepatic mixed function oxygenase system (MFO) in the channel catfish,Ictalurus punctatus. Initially, the optimum conditions were established for measuring hepatic MFO in this species of fish.

Responsiveness of Carmustine (BCNU) Treated Mice to Induction and Inhibition of Mixed Function Oxygenases

Journal of Urology, 1982
The responsiveness of BCNU treated mice to phenobarbital (Pb) induction of hepatic microsomal mixed function oxygenase (MFO) activity was studied. BCNU (30 mg/kg ip) produced significant (P less than 0.05) decreases in cytochrome P-450, total ethylmorphine metabolism (TEM) and ethylmorphine N-demethylase (EMN) by 21 days after treatment.

EFFECTS OF 7,12-DIMETHYLBENZ[a]ANTHRACENE ON IMMUNE FUNCTION AND MIXED-FUNCTION OXYGENASE ACTIVITY IN THE EUROPEAN STARLING

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 1994
AbstractImmune function and hepatic MFO activity were examined in adult and nestling starlings administered a synthetic PAH, 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). Methods used to examine the starling immune system included immunopa-thology, macrophage phagocytosis, lymphocyte blastogenesis to concanavalin A, and hemagglutination of sheep erythrocytes (

Presence of mixed function oxygenase in some marine invertebrates

Thalassia Jugoslavica, 1983
We could confirm MFO activity in crabs at the levelswhich are low compared to the activity levels found in vertebrates. MFO inducibility by Diesel-2 oil and benzo(a)pyrene was demonstrated in crab Pilumnus spinifer.
