Optimizing Household Waste Recycling Centre Network Reorganization in Hampshire

open access: yesNetworks, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Local councils across the UK are facing sustained financial pressures, and Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) are being increasingly considered for closure to reduce expenditure. In 2024, Hampshire County Council, which operates the largest HWRC network in the UK, proposed closing either five or twelve existing sites.

A Branch‐and‐Price Algorithm for the Symmetric Electric Traveling Salesman Problem

open access: yesNetworks, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Electric Traveling Salesman Problem (ETSP) is a variant of the well‐known TSP in which an electric vehicle must visit a set of customers minimizing the total cost of its route. The vehicle is assumed to be equipped with a battery of limited capacity that may need to be recharged along the route.

Energy Optimization Models for the Locomotive Assignment Problem

open access: yesNetworks, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Reducing energy consumption is a key objective in transportation. Using detailed infrastructure data, this study introduces the Green Locomotive Assignment Problem (GLAP) to minimize energy consumption in railway operations by efficiently assigning locomotives to pre‐scheduled trains.

A Two‐Stage Optimization Approach for Selecting Electric‐Flight Airports

open access: yesNetworks, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The decarbonization of short‐haul air transport has gained increasing attention, with electric aircraft emerging as a promising alternative to conventional short‐haul aviation. However, given the substantial investment anticipated for the necessary infrastructure, a strategic and globally coordinated selection of airports is imperative.

On the Complexity of the Paper Selection Problem for the Italian Research Quality Evaluation (VQR)

open access: yesNetworks, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This work addresses the paper selection problem that each Italian university and department faced in the context of the research quality evaluation (VQR) of the Italian university system for the period 2020–2024. Given the set of researchers of a university and their associated papers, the problem consists of selecting a fixed number of ...

Partial recovery of large seed arrival following ecological restoration in fragmented tropical rainforests

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Forest restoration success depends crucially on the reinitiation of ecological processes such as seed arrival that drive natural regeneration. We know little about whether, by increasing and diversifying local seed sources to alleviate seed limitation, and attracting animal frugivores to alleviate dispersal limitation, restoration could shift seed ...

Tailored for Binding: Alanine‐Modified Poly(1‐Naphthylamine) Targets Serum Albumins

open access: yesPolymer Engineering &Science, EarlyView.
Alanine modified poly(1‐naphthylamine). ABSTRACT This study presents a new approach for modifying the structural and functional properties of poly(1‐naphthylamine) (PNA) by incorporating the amino acid alanine (Ala) in different molar proportions (80/20, 50/50, and 20/80 for PNA/Ala) through an ultrasound‐assisted polymerization process.

From traditional practice to unsustainable exploitation: Fruit overharvesting on the endangered relict palm Jubaea chilensis

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Overharvesting of wild edible plants poses a growing threat to plant populations worldwide, particularly for slow‐growing species with limited regeneration. We quantified fruit extraction from the third‐largest known population of Jubaea chilensis—an endangered palm endemic to Chile—modeled the critical harvest threshold, and assessed consumer ...

Regional analysis of spatiotemporal trends in Colorado potato beetle abundance

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Leveraging a large data set on Colorado potato beetles in Wisconsin, we examine spatial and temporal abundance trends. Spatiotemporal statistical models substantially improve fit and show that climate and management factors are positively associated with abundance levels.

Statistical Monitoring of Multivariate Count Data From Real‐Time Particle Counters

open access: yesQuality and Reliability Engineering International, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In the pharmaceutical industry, production environments are monitored for bacterial contamination. Particle counters are increasingly investigated for real‐time monitoring of viable microorganisms using count data for different particle size intervals.
