Consensus Formation and Change are Enhanced by Neutrality
Neutral agents are shown to enhance both the formation and overturning of consensus in collective decision‐making. A general mathematical model and experiments with locusts and humans reveal that neutrality enables robust consensus via simple interactions and accelerates consensus change by reducing effective population size.

Non-convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming : a survey [PDF]
A wide range of problems arising in practical applications can be formulated as Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programs (MINLPs). For the case in which the objective and constraint functions are convex, some quite effective exact and heuristic algorithms are ...

Helix Alignment, Chevrons, and Edge Dislocations in Twist‐Bend Ferroelectric Nematics
The recently discovered twist‐bend ferroelectric nematic (NTBF) is the new member of the multiferroic family, representing a fluid with an oblique helicoidal (heliconical) periodic structure of spontaneous electric polarization. The work presents a thorough exploration of the material properties of this phase, how the periodic modulation of ...

Optimal Airport Surface Traffic Planning Using Mixed-Integer Linear Programming
We describe an ongoing research effort pertaining to the development of a surface traffic automation system that will help controllers to better coordinate surface traffic movements related to arrival and departure traffic. More specifically, we describe

Performance comparison of two recently proposed copositivity tests
Recently and simultaneously, two MILP-based approaches to copositivity testing were proposed. This note tries a performance comparison, using a group of test sets containing a large number of designed instances.

A mixed-integer linear programming approach for robust state estimation
In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation for robust state estimation (RSE) is proposed. By using the exactly linearized measurement equations instead of the original nonlinear ones, the existing mixed integer nonlinear ...

On the interplay of Mixed Integer Linear, Mixed Integer Nonlinear and Constraint Programming [PDF]
In this thesis we study selected topics in the field of Mixed Integer Programming (MIP), in particular Mixed Integer Linear and Nonlinear Programming (MI(N)LP). We set a focus on the influences of Constraint Programming (CP). First, we analyze Mathematical Programming approaches to water network optimization, a set of challenging optimization ...

The Transport PDE and Mixed-Integer Linear Programming
Discrete, nonlinear and PDE constrained optimization are mostly considered as different fields of mathematical research. Nevertheless many real-life problems are most naturally modeled as PDE constrained mixed integer nonlinear programs. For example, nonlinear network flow problems where the flow dynamics are governed by a transport equation are ...
