Genetic counseling and presymptomatic testing programs for Machado-Joseph disease: lessons from Brazil and Portugal

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2014
Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is an autosomal dominant, late-onset neurological disorder and the most common form of spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) worldwide. Diagnostic genetic testing is available to detect the disease-causing mutation by direct sizing of

Neural Markers of Interocular Grouping During Binocular Rivalry With MEG

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 47, Issue 10, July 2026.
Frequency‐tagged MEG revealed distinct neural correlates during binocular rivalry and interocular grouping. BR evoked stronger dominant responses, whereas grouping conditions showed comparable patterns during suppression. Notably, higher‐order intermodulation frequencies were enhanced in the visual cortex during IOG.

Semaglutide Treatment in Young Adults Living With Type 2 Diabetes: A Post Hoc Analysis From the SUSTAIN and PIONEER Clinical Trials

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 7, Page 5787-5802, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aims Young adults (aged ≤ 40 years) are underrepresented in clinical trials that investigate interventions for those living with Type 2 diabetes (T2D). This study evaluated the efficacy of semaglutide treatment in young adults with T2D by examining the effects on HbA1c and body weight (BW) during the SUSTAIN and PIONEER programmes compared to ...

Functional impact of bilateral vestibular loss and the unexplained complaint of oscillopsia

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology
IntroductionThe vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) stabilizes vision during head movements. VOR disorders lead to symptoms such as imbalance, dizziness, and oscillopsia. Despite similar VOR dysfunction, patients display diverse complaints. This study analyses

State biomarkers for Machado Joseph disease: Validation, feasibility and responsiveness to change

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology
Machado-Joseph disease (SCA3/MJD) is the most common spinocerebellar ataxia worldwide, and particularly so in Southern Brazil. Due to an expanded polyglutamine at ataxin-3, SCA3/MJD presents a relentless course with no current disease modifying treatment.
