Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) [PDF]
ADULTS, as well as children, develop metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). Does the adult with MLD also have a sulfatase A deficiency? If he does, can this enzyme deficiency really explain his illness? For example, if one presumes that the enzymic defect is inborn, why did his symptoms not begin when he was a child?

Frequency Discrimination and the MLD
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1972Binaural frequency difference limens in noise were obtained under homophasic and antiphasic conditions. Signal frequencies of 200, 300, 500, 700, and 1000 Hz were investigated at 5- and 10-dB sensation levels while 500 Hz was also explored at 15, 20, and 25 dB. The masker was a bandlimited noise with a spectrum level of 55 dB.

Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD)
Archives of Neurology, 1983A 31-year-old woman with adult metachromatic leukodystrophy was seen for a progressive dementia. Computed tomographic scans showed four, nearly mirror-image, hypoabsorptive areas in cerebral white matter. These symmetric bifrontal and biparietal abnormalities were accompanied by mild ventricular enlargement and by a slight to moderate volume loss ...

MLDs in Forward and Backward Masking
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1972Masking-level differences (MLDs) of substantial magnitudes were found in forward and backward masking situations. Their magnitude diminishes exponentially as the silent interval between signal and masker increases. Implications of the data for current models relating to the MLD are suggested.

Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, 1998
Treatment review is intended to inform and update nurses about treatments relevant to HIV/AIDS. Information presented in this column does not imply endorsement by ANAC. Additionally, the reader is advised that there is a paucity of scientific data to validate the effectiveness of manual lymph drainage.

Whereas the masking-level difference (MLD) in children is similar to that found in adults for wideband masking noise, children often have smaller MLDs for narrowband noise maskers. One possibility is that the small MLD of children in narrowband noise is related to the pronounced amplitude fluctuation of the masker.

The decrease in the size of the MLD with signal frequency is presumably caused by the inability of the auditory fibers to follow details of the waveform at high frequencies. The ear appreciates slow frequency envelope variations even at high carrier frequency, however, as the residue attests. Using amplitude modulation, we attempted to obtain an MLD by

This is a retrospective study of microlumbar discectomy (MLD), performed between 1983 and 1987. During that period, 60 patients underwent the procedure. At follow-up, after an average of 33.3 months, MLD provided excellent and good results in 93.3% of cases, fair in 3.3%, and failure in 3.3%.

Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD)
Archives of Neurology, 1971METACHROMATIC leukodystrophy (MLD) is characterized by deficient activity of sulfatase A (arylsulfatase A; cerebroside sulfatase) and by a corresponding accumulation of cerebroside sulfate. The disease begins at different ages and evolves at different tempos. Late infantile, juvenile, adult, and variant forms occur.

The first aim of this study was to obtain a more detailed picture of the effect of masker bandwidth (20 Hz to 1000 Hz bandwidth) on the masking level difference (MLD) for a 500-Hz signal as a function of listener age. The results of the pure-tone signal experiment showed that the MLDs of older children differed from adults only for the narrowest masker
