Approaching the Limit of Predictability in Human Mobility [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2013
In this study we analyze the travel patterns of 500,000 individuals in Cote d'Ivoire using mobile phone call data records. By measuring the uncertainties of movements using entropy, considering both the frequencies and temporal correlations of individual trajectories, we find that the theoretical maximum predictability is as high as 88%.

Day-to-Day Variability and Year-to-Year Reproducibility of Accelerometer-Measured Free-Living Sit-to-Stand Transitions Volume and Intensity among Community-Dwelling Older Adults

open access: yesSensors, 2021
(1) Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the day-to-day variability and year-to-year reproducibility of an accelerometer-based algorithm for sit-to-stand (STS) transitions in a free-living environment among community-dwelling older ...

Examining the Limits of Predictability of Human Mobility [PDF]

open access: yesEntropy, 2019
We challenge the upper bound of human-mobility predictability that is widely used to corroborate the accuracy of mobility prediction models. We observe that extensions of recurrent-neural network architectures achieve significantly higher prediction accuracy, surpassing this upper bound.

Cognition, functionality, and life space in older adults: the mediating role of perceived control and autonomy

open access: yesGeriatrics, Gerontology and Aging, 2023
Objectives: To examine a model of associations between cognition, functionality, and life-space mobility, and the mediating role of perceived control and autonomy. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of older adults aged over 72 years,

Limitations of mobile phone learning

open access: yesThe JALT CALL Journal, 2006
In this article, we discuss weaknesses inherent in mobile phone learning, and factors that limit its viability. (We do not discuss other m-learning devices such as PDAs.) We conclude that, while e-learning has met with some acceptance among educators and is increasingly being implemented, it will be necessary to solve the problems that we discuss ...

Lifestyle Factors and Incident Mobility Limitation in Obese and Non-obese Older Adults. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Objective: This study examines the association between incident mobility limitation and 4 lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, and diet in well-functioning obese (n = 667) and non-obese (n = 2027) older adults.
