Spatial Mode Division Multiplexing of Few Mode Fiber

European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication, 2012
The independent excitation and detection of spatial modes in few-mode fiber networks presents major challenges. This paper presents novel spatial mode-division-multiplexing techniques based on planar couplers and asymmetric Y-junctions. These developments may play a role in future high-capacity few-mode fiber telecommunications.

Fiber-chip link via mode division multiplexing

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2023
Applying mode division multiplexing techniques to a fiber-chip link would greatly increase its communication bandwidth. However, its implementation is very difficult due to the huge higher-order mode mismatch between multimode integrated waveguides and optical fibers (FMF).

Low loss mode multiplexer de-multiplexer for mode division multiplexing over two mode fiber

2015 Workshop on Recent Advances in Photonics (WRAP), 2015
Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) over Few Mode Fiber (FMF) enhances the capacity of an optical fiber system by providing additional degrees of freedom in the form of modes which are selectively excited at the transmitter and selectively detected at the receiver. The key to capitalize on such a system is implementation of low loss mode multiplexer (mux)

Degenerate Mode-Group Division Multiplexing

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2012
A reconfigurable mode demultiplexer based around a liquid crystal spatial light modulator is demonstrated to optically demultiplex modes that share a propagation constant as separate modal channels using a single shared phase mask per polarization for all channels.

DSP for Mode Division Multiplexing

2013 18th OptoElectronics and Communications Conference held jointly with 2013 International Conference on Photonics in Switching, 2013
We discuss possible architectures and complexity scaling of SDM interfaces that include multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing (DSP) to deal with coupling between spatial and polarization modes.

Holographic Mode-Group Division Multiplexing

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2011, 2011
Specific fibre modes are deliberately excited in a few-mode and multimode fibre using holography. The same system is also used to demonstrate holography's ability to detect and route individual fibre modes.

On-Chip Mode-Division Multiplexer

CLEO: 2013, 2013
We demonstrate micron-scale on-chip mode-division multiplexing device with low crosstalk using add-drop silicon ring resonators array. We taper the bus waveguide width to selectively phase-match the different bus waveguide modes to the ring mode.

Integrated mode converter for mode division multiplexing

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
The ever growing demands of bandwidth in optical communication systems are making traditional Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) based systems to reach its limit. In order to cope with future bandwidth demand is necessary to use new levels of orthogonality, such as the waveguide mode or the polarization state.

Few-mode fibers for mode-division multiplexing

2013 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series, 2013
The design of few-mode fibers will be discussed from the point of view of key attributes and fundamental limitations. We will consider the maximum number of modes that might be supported in a practical fiber.

Holographic mode generation for mode division multiplexing

National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference, 2012
This paper demonstrates how techniques from computational holography can be employed to significantly improve the modal selectivity of phase masks used in mode division multiplexing.
