Mode coupling effects in mode-division-multiplexed systems
2012 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series, 2012Mode coupling is a key to overcoming major challenges in mode-division-multiplexed (MDM) long-haul systems using coherent detection. Strong mode coupling reduces the modal group delay spread, minimizing the complexity of digital multi-input multi-output (MIMO) signal processing.

Few-Mode Fibers for Mode-Division-Multiplexed Systems
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2014We describe the design trade-offs that are at stake when optimizing few-mode fibers (FMFs) that support a high number ( $\ge$ 6) of LP modes. We particularly detail the design of 6-LP-mode fibers that allow to multiply the capacity by a tenfold factor (two modes being spatially non-degenerate and four modes being two times spatially degenerate).

Mode-division Multiplexed Transmission with Fiber Mode Couplers
Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2012We describe the mode-division multiplexing(MDM) transmission using a conventional fiber coupler with negligible modal crosstalk. A 2×10Gbps MDM transmission was achieved over a 10km two-mode fiber without any signal processing.

Five mode groups EDFA for Mode Division Multiplexing
Frontiers in Optics 2015, 2015We propose a few-mode EDFA for amplification of 5 mode groups with less than 2.2 dB DMG over C-band using fundamental mode pumping. The annulus core EDF is studied using annulus and extra annulus doping.

Dual mode and wavelength-division multiplexing
Frontiers in Optics 2015, 2015Simultaneous mode and wavelength division multiplexing is proposed using integrated asymmetric directional coupler and multimode interference waveguide. Using numerical simulations, the device exhibits low insertion loss of 1.2dB and a cross-talk of -18dB.

Multimode Fibers for Mode Division Multiplexing
Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 2017Graded-index-core multimode fibers can be appropriately rescaled in diameters and optimized to have low differential mode group delays for 6 to 36 spatial modes for multiple-input-multiple-output mode-division-multiplexed transmissions.

Optical Amplifiers for Mode Division Multiplexing
2018Space division multiplexing (SDM) has attracted considerable attention from the optical fiber communication community as a promising means to increase the transmission capacity per fiber and, more importantly, to reduce the associated cost per transmitted information bit by utilizing multiple spatial channels within a single strand of glass.

Mode-Division Multiplexing at Visible Wavelengths
CLEO 2024We demonstrate mode-division multiplexing at visible wavelengths (473 nm) for the first time using adiabatic mode couplers. We measure less than -15 dB and -20 dB crosstalk for TE2 and TE3 higher-order mode couplers, respectively.
