Complexity in Designing Energy Efficient Buildings: Towards Understanding Decision Networks in Design [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Most important decisions for designing energy efficient buildings are made in the early stages of design. Designing is a complex interdisciplinary task, and energy efficiency requirements are pushing boundaries even further. This study analyzes the level

Complexity, economics, and innovation policy: How two kinds of science lead to two kinds of economics and two kinds of policy

open access: yes, 2017
One interpretation of complexity science is that it distinguishes two types of science—an equilibrium science of forces, as begun by Newton, and a complexity science of rules, as exemplified by Wolfram (2002).

Entropy‐Driven Design of Low‐Melting‐Point Alloys via Compositionally Complex Strategy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Conventional low‐melting‐point alloys (LMPAs) are limited by a narrow compositional space and inherent property trade‐offs. This review presents an entropy‐driven design strategy that overcomes these limitations, ushering in a new class of low‐melting‐point compositionally complex alloys (LMCCAs).

Taxonomy of project complexity indicators in energy megaprojects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A megaproject is characterised by its large size of investment, long project duration and high level of technical and process complexities. Megaprojects in the energy sector might include nuclear power plant construction, oil exploration and wind farm ...

A practical and nuanced framework for entity linking evaluation

open access: yesJournal of Biomedical Semantics
Background Entity linking maps textual mentions with entities in vocabularies. While accuracy is the primary metric for entity linking evaluation, it fails to capture the complexity of model behaviour.

Design of a Multistable Finger Prosthesis with Programmable Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This research article shows the development of a multistable programmble metamaterial for the use as a finger prosthesis. The material was designed on different hierarchical levels where the influence of geometrical parameters and combination of mechanical elements was explored.

Feasibility and Limitations of the Advanced Replica Process for Bioactive Glasses

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Periodic 3D‐printed Kelvin‐cell templates enable a controlled advanced replica process for fabricating highly porous glass lattices. Across P45K9, 45S5, and 13–93, material‐dependent differences in coating, burnout, and shrinkage lead to distinct strut morphologies, while comparable final porosities of 83%–88% are retained.

Biomass Native Structure Into Functional Carbon‐Based Catalysts for Fenton‐Like Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study indicates that eight biomasses with 2D flaky and 1D acicular structures influence surface O types, morphology, defects, N doping, sp2 C, and Co nanoparticles loading in three series of carbon, N‐doped carbon, and cobalt/graphitic carbon. This work identifies how these structural factors impact catalytic pathways, enhancing selective electron
