Nonlinear Methods for Model Reduction

open access: yes, 2020
The usual approach to model reduction for parametric partial differential equations (PDEs) is to construct a linear space $V_n$ which approximates well the solution manifold $\mathcal{M}$ consisting of all solutions $u(y)$ with $y$ the vector of ...

Simple model for drag reduction [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2003
Direct Numerical Simulations established that the FENE-P model of viscoelastic flows exhibits the phenomenon of turbulent drag reduction which is caused in experiments by dilute polymeric additives. To gain analytic understanding of the phenomenon we introduce in this Letter a simple 1-dimensional model of the FENE-P equations.

Counterexample-Preserving Reduction for Symbolic Model Checking [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The cost of LTL model checking is highly sensitive to the length of the formula under verification. We observe that, under some specific conditions, the input LTL formula can be reduced to an easier-to-handle one before model checking.

Paper Machine Modeling at Norske Skog Saugbrugs: A Mechanistic Approach [PDF]

open access: yesModeling, Identification and Control, 2002
In this paper a mechanistic model of a paper machine is presented. The model is developed as a foundation for the control of three selected variables; the basis weight, the paper ash content, and the white water total concentration (or wire tray total ...

Empirical Model Reduction of Controlled Nonlinear Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
In this paper we introduce a new method of model reduction for nonlinear systems with inputs and outputs. The method requires only standard matrix computations, and when applied to linear systems results in the usual balanced truncation. For nonlinear

Turbine wheel reduced modal model for self-excited vibration suppression by inter-blade dry-friction damping [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences: Technical Sciences, 2023
A new approach to calculations based on the modal synthesis method is proposed for the evaluation of structural and dry-friction damping effects on self-excited vibrations due to aeroelastic instability in bladed turbine wheels.

State-space reduction and equivalence class sampling for a molecular self-assembly model [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2016
Direct simulation of a model with a large state space will generate enormous volumes of data, much of which is not relevant to the questions under study.

LASFormer: Light Transformer for Action Segmentation with Receptive Field-Guided Distillation and Action Relation Encoding

open access: yesMathematics, 2023
Transformer-based models for action segmentation have achieved high frame-wise accuracy against challenging benchmarks. However, they rely on multiple decoders and self-attention blocks for informative representations, whose huge computing and memory ...

Sickle Cell Disease Is an Inherent Risk for Asthma in a Sibling Comparison Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Sickle cell disease (SCD) and asthma share a complex relationship. Although estimates vary, asthma prevalence in children with SCD is believed to be comparable to or higher than the general population. Determining whether SCD confers an increased risk for asthma remains challenging due to overlapping symptoms and the ...
