Self-improving control systems may belong to either of two categories, according to whether or not they embody an explicit model of the part of their environment with which they interact. The two forms of operation are discussed and compared, and it is shown that the two may be mathematically equivalent.

Model World: A Model Is a Model Is a Model Is a Model
Interfaces, 1989This occasional column will address issues — both real and imaginary — that impinge on what I think is the main activity of management science/operations research: building models that attempt to describe the world as it was, as it is, and as it will be.

When looking at relationships between two quantities, we are often interested in fitting a mathematical function to describe this relationship. Statisticians call these functions models. This activity uses data on levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at a site in Hawaii to illustrate fitting a model to data.

Interactions, 2009
Editor's note: This forum presents models relevant to interaction design and service design. It describes the models, how they might be used, and why they matter. It also describes the models' origins and contrasts related models.

Metaphilosophy, 2013
AbstractMichael Dummett famously maintained that analytic philosophy was simply philosophy that followed Frege in treating the philosophy of language as the basis for all other philosophy (1978, 441). But one important insight to emerge from computer science is how difficult it is to animate the linguistic artifacts that the analysis of thought ...

Kids love models, and on page 792 of this issue Shimizu et al. give us an early Christmas present. Using plastic replicas of the CheA, CheW, and Tsr protein structures, they assembled the pieces like a jigsaw puzzle.

Caries Research, 2015
Developing experimental models to understand dental caries has been the theme in our research group. Our first, the pH-cycling model, was developed to investigate the chemical reactions in enamel or dentine, which lead to dental caries. It aimed to leverage our understanding of the fluoride mode of action and was also utilized for the formulation of ...

Models, modelling and modellers: an application to risk analysis
European Journal of Operational Research, 1994Risk analysis has become increasingly important with the emergence of new, unknown and potentially dangerous technologies. Risk analysis builds on the use of models. If the models are valid representations of reality, they can be used to predict and thus also to minimize the risks.
